I know I'm a little late to the game here, but my personal reccommendation would be a 2000/1 Audi A4 with the 1.8T. I picked up a 2000 A4: 5 speed, two tone leather, sunroof, Bose, Quattro, sport package with 59k miles for 12k back in May of 2005. I then proceeded to put 50k miles on it in 2 years and just traded it in a little bit ago to get the Mrs. a truck. Given what I paid 2 years ago, these are certainly in your price range.
My impressions:
Maintenance: I changed the oil every 5k miles, I put a new set of tires on it around 90k and I had to change the tie rods out at 100k. Other than that the car NEVER gave me a problem. However, I would have needed to do about 2,000 in maintenance to keep it on the road if I kept it. Things like the timing belt, water pump, clutch and shocks. These are all normal maintenance items and weren't preventing me from driving the car, they were just things that I would have done to keep it running good.
Fuel economy: I had a mainly highway commute and routinely saw 30+mpg cruising at 70 or so. Around town was in the low-mid 20's.
Performance: The car was certainly nowhere near as fast as my GTO, but it was a very fun car to drive. The 2000 models only have 150hp, but the car did make good torque and never felt sluggish as long as you kept on top of it, which made driving/shifting fun. The 2001 (I would reccommend this year) came with 170hp and added VVT on the intake side. It handled great and had no problem reaching and holding triple digits on the highway. There is a very healthy aftermarket for the 1.8T and A4's in general. While a chip and exhaust may set you back 1k+, they will also net you a 70+ increase in horsepower. Not to mention that AWE tuning is in Bristol and is a good Audi/VW shop. If you chip the car either model year will achieve the same power. However, the BEST part is the Quattro AWD. This car was a freaking TANK. I never had any issues plowing through deep snow and driving anywhere I wanted, even on the crappy Hankook Ventus' that were on the car when I got it. I used to amuse myself by driving around in snow storms and taunting guys in giant diesel pick ups that I could beat them off a light. Suffice to say they weren't happy to see a little sedan out playing in the snow with the "big boys".
Comfort: It's an Audi. The car sits low, especially with the sport package. It kind of feels like you are sitting on the road, at least to me, but I like that feeling. I'm 6'4" and 280, so if I fit, so will most other people. The trunk is huge and the rear seats do fold down, so the car is quite capable of hauling things. As for the rear seats, they are really only good for occasional use. Most rear passengers felt cramped. The ride even with the sport suspension with 100k on it was excellent. The car was always composed and never rode harsh even on the worst roads. Compared to your Stang it will feel like a Lincoln Continental.
Just some advice and my impressions. Overall I don't think you will be disappointed and Audi's hold their value very well, which means if you take care of it, the car you buy for 10k today, may still be worth 5 or so in three years.
