I've been looking at your dsm collection and i must say.. very nice. I'm actually thinking about trading my spec v for a later body style gst or gsx... gotta be a six bolt though. Lemme know if anything swings by your way and you'd be interested.

Foolinaround 02-06-2010 12:36 PM

Thank you everyone else for the comments.

VR4G63: Thank you ;) :) !!!!

Why a 6bolt? You guys crack me up sometimes. I squeezed out over 400hp out of my 7bolt and DD'd it. Every car out there ends up with some endplay, so keep up with your maintenence and mod smart and you should be straight. Plus, if you don't swap it yourself, you don't know if it was hacked or not.

laser92dsm 02-07-2010 10:11 AM

That is true^^ thats why im building the 7 bolt in my car but throwing a 6 bolt head on it.

I see what youre saying but its just common knowledge that 7 bolts like to crank walk and 6 bolts dont. Maybe not 100% of the time but the 6 is def more reliable outta the box than the 7. Basically, id drive the car everyday so i actually wouldn't mod it. I do maintain my cars but its just one more thing I wouldn't wanna worry about with my dd. Also, Eclipsegsxkid seems to know what hes doing and is upfront with every thing he does.

Basically, long story short, it would have to be a little to no modded 6 bolt in a 2g body with low miles on the chassis.

Foolinaround 02-07-2010 01:03 PM

There is a huge write up about 7bolt vs 6 bolt crankwalk. Someone find it. its basically said it dosent matter the motor

That debate is old as dirt and invalid. I personally know someone who has walked a 6bolt, and my first experience with crankwalk was in my uncle's boosted WS6. Every engine with higher mileage has shaft endplay. The only "common knowledge" you're expressing at this point is that you're reading into stereotypes, and making yourself look silly by throwing assumptions around. Yes, 7bolts have been known to walk, but it's only certain years and the myth is one that is completely blown out of proportion. Why fix something that's not broken?

vr4g63 02-07-2010 01:51 PM

agreed. i pulled my tranny out to do the clutch and tob because of the distinct tob noise...and to my surprise the clutch and tob were fine and i grabbed the flywheel with my hands and could pull the crank in and out about a half an inch! lol....annnnd its a 6 bolt

i will as soon as i have enough posts to post pics! i need to make a vid with a dial indicator you guys wouldnt believe it i have never seen one this bad i cant believe it still ran fine before i took it apart, but now its gonna be down for awhile until i have the funds to get the machine work done on my other block and buy bearings and gaskets and what not

HaveBlue83 02-07-2010 02:35 PM

u know, i would like to build up a 7 bolt just to say "it's still just a lil ol 7-bolt...." lol.

i it's still running great, I have no plans on swapping to a 6 "just because"

jesus_ralliart 02-07-2010 03:06 PM

Alright, then i stand corrected but id still prefer a 6 bolt. Preference.

outlawzxblizz99 02-07-2010 03:08 PM

grab a 6 bolt or 7 bolt and throw in some 1g rods with 2g pistons and a 2g head and your set.....get the best of both worlds

gtsiawd96 02-08-2010 10:28 AM

Being around these cars for almost 8 years now. I think that the 7-bolt vs. 6-bolt is slightly overhyped by the people just coming into the DSM scene. It has been found by some of the best in the industry that the 7-bolt while some things seem better about the design and they had the right idea with the main girdle design. For the most part he 7-bolt block is inferior to the 6-bolt. The oil squirter design being the main culprit.

Personally I have had 3 7 bolts walk on me 95 and 96. So obviously I don't like them very much. I have heard of 6-bolts walking and Evo VIII's walking. While veryy rare. Anything can happen there only machines. I just couldn't see myself building a 95-96 7 bolt and just hoping its okay. The 6 Bolt just seems much more logical to me.

I'f I were starting out and had a choice of picking up a car low mileage with the swap already completed. I certianly would take a look at it and obviously inspect that it wasnt hacked in there.

Don't get me wrong there are 7-bolts making high horsepower. Personally I just wouldn't sink money into one.

olmytsi 02-08-2010 12:13 PM

Im with you JJ...haven't had a 7 bolt in my car since 2005; I sold my 7 bolt to a friend and it walked on him a few months later.

With that said, I bought a 6 bolt about 2 years ago and was going over it before putting it in the car and discovered it had CW.

I know a few people who have walked 6 bolts but it's usually a rebuilt engine and the assembly is what caused it...they rarely walk on their own.
