Yea but I don't think uppers are "going anywhere", you can get a complete one for 500ish, there's just a lot of parts involved in building a gun from stripped parts

~Brian~ 12-22-2012 12:26 AM

True, but I've always wanted to build my own. Get really good parts and know how to take it all down if I need to.

Any suggestions for parts kits for the upper and lowers?

And maybe a link to some of those $500ish uppers just to satisfy my curiosity. haha

I keep hearing that, but I'm just concerned about the "all in one" drop in idea...

99corvette 12-22-2012 10:20 AM

Geissele super 3 gun. Get it and you will never look back. I installed one on my ar when I built it, now my brother and my father went out and bought one. I have been stop at ranges by people thinking I was shooting a f/a gun and showed them that its not a machinegun. They couldn't believe a semi auto was shooting that fast.

CleanNeon98 12-22-2012 10:21 AM

Installed the new goods on the AK, sights are not here yet :(

I don't remember the last time I saw you but I think you're a bit shorter than me. The factory wood stock was not nearly long enough, I barely feel comfortable with this one on full compact mode and even then its alraedy 2 inches longer.

Got my Tech-Sights in today, gonna install tonight. I want to turn this AK into a fun-gun, for long and short range. Really like the ATI stock, almost want one for my Nagant too.

I'm six feet tall, not exactly short haha. I've owned 10+ ak's and never had an issue with the length of the stock. At the end of the day it's whatever you are most comfortable with though, I just think the woods ore aesthetically pleasing. All personal preference.

::edit:: pleaseeeeee don't put a tactical stock on the Nagant, that's like putting one on an m1

CleanNeon98 12-22-2012 11:31 PM

Gotta get it to eject rounds first. Can't get rid of that sticky bolt to save my life I think the bolt needs some polishing cause I've done the chamber a few times already

InfiniteMotors 12-22-2012 11:48 PM

I'm still looking for AR/AK stuffs. Started before craze, now kicking myself a bit. If anyone has one they'd part with or trade, let me know.

This is for my Mosin Nagant but as far as AKs go, some might say you can even lube them with mud haha

I was gonna say you can lube them with sand

cmr076 12-23-2012 02:19 AM

Alex, did you check the mag assembles? It can interfere with smooth bolt operation/extraction, also, the extractor spring and or pin could be worn to ****.

some guy's have been known to lube their AR's with astroglide.

I'm not that close to my rifle

Dave, wehnever I extract a fired round from the chamber it has a mark on it like it was scratched. same mark, same spot, every time. If I just cycle an unfired round it comes out like butter. Gets stiffer after 20 shots or so

Ak and ar are wayyyyy different... Perfect example:

This gun was dug up after 18 years, not cleaned, had some motor oil poured in it and it was good to go

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RgrJElGOMMg

Alex, ill check with my buddy Jon, he has cases of nagants haha and knows them inside and out. did you check the mag like I said? And the extractor spring and pin? Are you using lacquered ammo? Does it happen with all ammo? When you polished the barrel, how did you know how far to polish it? Sme people use a 12 gauge pore purse on a power droll to make sure there's no burrs or inconsistencies.

Yep did that. I dunno if it got it all though, maybe need polishing compound. Usually when you get in there to polish the chamber, it won't let you go down the barrell because of how small it is. Yes laquered ammo, but I haven't shot anything else. I'll post a pic of the marking on the casings.

You've never tried decent ammo? The lacquer can make the rounds more inconsistent in size, coupled with the ****ty machining on those guns back then can make for some pretty whacky tolerances. I've owned guns that were really picky about ammo, that could be the issue.

Why not take it to a gunsmith? John Robinson is at Clayton's now, I can't imagine they'd charge you more than 30-40 bucks to do a thorough polish on it

I might have to do that. Gonna disassemble the bolt this evening and see whats what. Might try some new ammo too but I really want it to shoot the surplus OK because its so cheap.

Some guns just don't like surplus ammo, believe it or not I had an ak a few years ago that couldn't shoot it

Almost doesn't make sense considering the ammo and gun were probably of a similar timeperiod. If anything I'd expect the old guns not to shoot the newer ammo, but meh who knows.

Got my Tech-Sights on the AK, need to get another drustcover because I messed up the one they sent me (it was a perfect fit and i cut it becuase I didnt notch the rear sight all the way in. Then the cover became too short). Gonna sight the sucker in tomorrow morning and maybe bring a drill to the range and de-burr the mosin again after a few hot rounds, maybe it will loosen that crud up.

CleanNeon98 12-24-2012 02:17 PM

I was also surprised to find that Dick's at Franklin Mills had 7.62x39 in stock. If anyone sees some surplus cans floating around can you let me know?

cmr076 12-24-2012 03:01 PM

Noone online has in stock. I think the ban scare is making people hold on to what they got

99corvette 12-25-2012 03:42 PM

**** cheaperthendirt, they will never get any of my business. I hope magpul never sells to them guys again. That goes to any other company that thinks its right to charge 5x the value of something.

schaffer 12-25-2012 04:39 PM

Agreed, the way people are jacking prices up makes me sick

2g Talon 12-25-2012 07:35 PM

Its called supply and demand, our entire country's economy was founded on it. Don't blame the companies for jacking up prices, thank your fellow man that deemed it a "must have" item and shortening supplies, and thus driving up the price for those items. Don't blame the company for making 5x over retail for them, laugh and be pissed off at the retards who paid that much in the first place and will continue to pay that price to get it.

So we went to the range today. This is from 25 yards with TULA 7.62x39 and a WASR10/63. I must say the new stock makes it much more comfy to hold and shoot, and the little cheap muzzle brake seems to have actually softened the kick a bit. I shot this from a bench but not with a stand or anything so I don't know how 100% the same all my aim points were. I tried to adjust the sights a little but to no avail the shots all landed this way. Only ones closer to center are when I aimed for the far right, and one squib up top. Sights are adjustable front and rear and windage and elevation. Tips for what to do?
