Thanks

I can add to that list and offer you some trigger time with my XD or M&P.

I thought of another great proven option that would fit into the high end of your price range and be dead-reliable.

At almost every gun show I've ever been to, they have at least a table or two full of used police Sig P229s. They're usually in the $400 - $500 range depending on condition. The nice thing is with used sigs, like glocks, replacement parts are readily available. So if you need something like, for instance, a recoil spring, you can just buy it online and have it shipped right to your house.

Same here. My M&P will always be at the range with me and if I don't find a buyer for my Sig before we meet up, my P229 will be there as well. Svicks, rodder's M&P compact is a 9mm (IIRC) and mine is a .40S&W so you can get a feel for the difference between the two rounds on two identical guns and also apply it loosely to a .357Sig as well since .40 feels most similar to the .40 instead of the 9mm. I'm sure there will be a few .45ACPs floating around too. Once you've shot a few different calibers in similar guns you can really start to notice some differences. Also, assuming we go to Classic, they have a bunch of carry-able rentals. They're pretty cheap to rent and we'll have tons of ammo so you won't have to buy whole boxes of each caliber that you want to try.

As for finding the P229 at shows - while I was shopping for mine I had a hell of a time finding any at shows or even in shops. On Friday at the VF Gun Show in December there were three at the entire show, and I bought one. lol. Mine was a Sig Pre-Owned, then there was a brand new blue-band one at the next table (that had more visible wear than mine on the outside), and one old beat up one in 9mm. There were two P228s, but they were really beat. One had smileys on the barrel that had gone past wear on the finish and had actually worn a deep groove. The rails were completely dull silver (100% dead) and looked like they were never lubed.

I'm in for shooting any time you guys want to. Dave, calling ahead would be awesome since we would easily have enough people for a whole room. It would be nice to not be all split up.

Just signed up on pafoa.org (same user name here) I need to get my post count up to browse and search the forum (dave i sent you a friend request) ha

Wow this all sounds great, as just getting together with such a vast knowledge base group would help tremendously with my great lack of knowledge in many areas...

Once again I appreciate everyones will to help and to get my on my feet here

Dave that Glock looks in one of the best shaped used g19 ive seen for sale online so far, maybe i can save up the extra dough and make an offer on it without the 33rd and your buddy could have that take the price down a tad :) just curious ha

Also if im going to be possibly saving a little more for a gun before i buy

How many people carry a XD9? they are also found for a great price online

I also pm'd a few members on pafoa.org about come guns for sale, 2 of them being xd9 for what i feel are fair prices

and to be honest the s&w sigma 9mm is still on my mind (I know, i know how you guys feel about that gun ha), however the features of the xd seem like something i may feel more comfortable with such as the indicators and internal safety features.... and its like for 150 so more than what the sigma would be i could either make an offer on daves glock :) or pick up a great condition xd on the forums doesnt seem like a bad idea for a longer term investment into a gun...

However all the bad stuff ive heard about the sigma was the earlier released version and they fixed a lot of problems with the newer version?

keep me going guys...

hey ill go accept your friend request now, the glock is so clean because I have carried her maybe twice and havent fired her in MONTHS.

What are you looking to spend, TOPS? I may be able to work with you on the glock, If I do sell I want her to go to a good home and would rather see you with her than the sigma, but like I said before I would request that if you get to a point where you want to sell her you sell her back to me.

on a complete other note I have had this 50 BMG itch I cant seem to scratch... I know I know I wont have a use for it but I really want one, someone (jordan or itstock) pleaes talk me out of this! It would pretty much deplete my NFA savings

At this point with more research ive been doing and listening your advice the sigma is def not a first or second pick at this point ha...

Ive been looking and im looking to stay sub 450 on the price at this point, decided to take the extra 2 weeks or so it will take me to put aside a little more dough to make a decent first purchase instead of buying a gun just to have a gun if you know what i mean

$450 is a good number. Like I said before, you can get pretty much any 'regular' gun - a carry-able gun, not a show piece - for around that price. Only one thing I'd stress again though, go shoot some before you put a cap on what you want to spend and before you completely eliminate a gun from your list of possibles. Also remember that it's not just the cost of the gun that you have to worry about. You need to buy a quality gun and also save for a quality holster (the first time - don't be an idiot like me and buy 5 for the same gun because they all suck). You also need money for range ammo, both when renting guns and when shooting other peoples' guns (only if you want to shoot a lot lol). You also should put aside some cash for things like cleaning supplies and even carry ammo. You can expect a solid $25-30 for 20 rounds of anything worth carrying. You don't need to buy the best of everything, but believe me, it all adds up quickly. That's why I waited so long to buy a gun even after I was really into the idea of carrying.

You say you're at school now and you'll be home in two weeks. Why don't we finalize some plans to meet at Classic Pistol on that Sunday and you'll get to shoot pretty much every gun in your price range. Wait until then to start making offers on guns and to start really thinking about what features you're looking for in a gun.

For example, right now you may like the idea of a loaded chamber indicator that's found on newer Sigs, XDs, M&Ps, Glocks, etc. What I can tell you for certain is that once you become comfortable with your gun you'll never use it for any kind of serious double check of a loaded chamber... ever. It's only there as a 'feel good' feature, probably adopted for use because of some weak minded individual(s) crying at the gun manufacturers about "safety" or whatever. Once you get some training and some time spent at the range and carrying you'll learn that some form of a press-check is the only reliable and safe way to make sure it's loaded, and that the only time a gun is unloaded is when it's field stripped and laying in pieces on your table and there isn't a single round in sight.

Another note about internal safeties, etc... anything comparable to an XD is going to have a comparable internal safety. Gloks, XDs, M&Ps, etc, they all have internal 'drop' safeties. The difference with XDs though is that they have the grip safety, which personally I find to be a bit annoying and distracting. Glocks have the trigger safety that protrudes through the center of the trigger. Again, I find it uncomfortable and distracting. M&Ps have the hinged trigger which I feel is the most 'normal' feeling of them all, but other people feel that it makes for a weak feeling or mushy trigger. Gotta try them all first though to be sure which one you want.

I definitly hear you on this one, and was not plan on unloading until after the little get together and give myself more time to save the extra dough for the 450 price range that i have come to realize is where i "really" want to be right now...

I totally feel you on the striker indicator thing as just a feel good feature, but i do like the idea of a grip safety :/...My first choice of gun when i first started looking was G17 and G19 and they have no features like this and was quite aware of what i would have to learn to handle a gun with such....

I like that both the glock and xd series have no safety other than trigger or xd grip safety

How much money should i bring to the meet to compensate you guys hooking me up..any of you can pm or text me

on a complete other note I have had this 50 BMG itch I cant seem to scratch... I know I know I wont have a use for it but I really want one, someone (jordan or itstock) pleaes talk me out of this! It would pretty much deplete my NFA savings

Think MP5...

And SvicksTc, if you don't get the Glock, I would def recommend the Springfield XD or XDM series. I have an XDM now and I love the way it shoots. Very well build and very safe. It would be a great first handgun for you.

I'm going to try and pick up an RDIAS at the end of this year depending on how much I put in to my house. My thoughts are, I wish I did this a long time ago instead of purchasing the other guns, the .50 included.

You won't hear me talking you out of an HK sub/sear or M16/sear.

blkZ06 01-18-2011 11:27 PM

You have my permission to not buy a .50BMG yet

Stop dropping money into semi auto ****, get the sand out of your vagina and buy a god damn machine gun

I am not sure if the XDM 4.5'' series would be to big of a gun for daily carry compared to the sub xd 4''? the xdm has 19+1 capacity and im not sure if i really need that? compared to the as im sure you know 16+1 capacity of the xd, however, ive read it has greater accuracy, etc.

i will be wanting to carry with iwb
