I sent this e-mail to the County Administrator.
Quote:
After contacting the county sheriff’s office and the Woodbury Police Department, myself and others have been forwarded to your office, and myself and the people I represent ( www.tristatetuners.com ) would like to possibly schedule an appointment to meet with you, or an approved staff member.
I know time must be tight before the holiday, but is there any chance we could borrow about 30 minutes or less of your time, some time in January, or before the holiday if possible?
Let me tell you why I am writing this request to you.
My name is Gabe Fletcher. I am an active user on the website Tri State Tuners. TST is a website that allows people from all over the Tri State area, to meet and talk about cars online. We are a nonprofit website, and when we go collect monies from members, all profits and proceeds often go to charity, or simply keeping the community open.
The members of TST travel all over the area, to meet up and simply talk about cars. I know what your thinking, guys and cars don’t mix. We are a different community. We don’t condone street racing, loud, obnoxious annoying music, loud engine revving or other annoyance or law breaking things at any of our meets. Even with that said, the police still break up all of our meets, where ever we go, because they simply think we are organizing races. We spend way too much money on our cars to be doing such illegal things.
We were meeting at the Woodbury Parking Garage, in Woodbury NJ, for a few months, never ONCE being harassed for doing anything illegal, but the police showed up one night, and we were all asked to leave, even though it is a public parking structure, with operating hours of 7am to 2am. (we were asked to leave at about 10pm) The Woodbury Garage is an ideal meet spot for the winter, since it keeps us out of the weather, and a lot of the TST members simply like the location.
The Sergeant at the Woodbury Police Department said we needed permission from the county to meet at this location (We usually meet on Thursday nights, at about 7pm and go until about midnight or earlier) on Thursdays.
We always have administrative members of our online community overseeing the meets, to make sure people stay in line, don’t rev their engines, play their music loudly and obey the speed limit, and they also make sure that the people attending the meets, also obey those rules, when leaving the meets, because we don’t want anyone to cause or get into any trouble, or hurt anyone. If anyone gets out of line or breaks meet rules, we ask them to leave and not to return. I will be one of the people that over see this.
We also want to be able to exercise our amendment right to assemble peacefully, without prosecution, which we should be able to do, but for the simple point of making sure everyone is satisfied and to make sure we take all the necessary and legal steps, we want the county’s permission.
With all of that said, we would like to sit down with you or some approved member of your office, to discuss this matter.
