holy **** that sucks...

i was up $1400 before i put in my last W2... brought it down to me owing $163... the company i work at decided, around october i think, to split our building off into a separate company... that whole process ****ed me up apparently. I probably would be seeing 2k+ back if it wasn't for that.

yea I didn't know making over $5k in freelance automatically classifies me as a private business. :(

I also owe PA $1900 but most of that will be covered by what i get back from NJ.

yup... it sucks... anything over 5k additional income gets taxed. Time to start adding on that 6% sales tax as well to freelance jobs. Then put what... 33% aside for taxes later on... boooo

grimm 02-27-2009 12:59 PM

Exactly!!! It's great to be able to make the extra money but it's sad how much gets taken :( I think this will really get me to get my rear in gear with officially, legally becoming a business so i can start deducting the crap out of everything i do.

i believe if you're being taxed for additional income you can deduct certain items. I was told around 25% of household bills can be deducted if that is where you work... so rent, electricity, water, cable internet, computer, etc.

grimm 02-27-2009 01:11 PM

yea i need to read up on that stuff for next year because since i own a home i think there are certain logistics that apply to how much of your utilities you can deduct and rent/mortgage etc etc. This year I put my new laptop and software in as business deductions but i know there is more i can take advantage of.
