I already posted a thread about this, but I thought I'd ask you guys anyway...

Do you know where the engine code is stamped into the block? Or is it different on every motor? I need to find the code on my car to see exactly what motor/year it is.

Elliott18t 01-06-2009 11:46 AM

think its different for different motors.. but if its like the same engine but a different version of it, for example mine has a few.. they are in the same spot.. at least i think so haha.

It's different on every motor, check the side of the motor down below the head, or ask Russiankid, he has a 2.5L I-6 in his BMW.

Well, I just need to find out the year my motor is in the 3. I need to get an alternator and I'm not sure if there are any differences between years.

Elliott18t 01-06-2009 11:53 AM

ahh hmmm well i see there are at least two versions but idk if year makes a difference..

found this on a bimmer forum :

The M50 was introduced for the 91 MY. You can tell by just popping your hood, if your engine has a black plastic cover w/ silver letters and stripes; its an M50. The M20 looks more "old school", with cast metal intake manifolds, etc.

He just wants some one to fill his dreams, because, he will never find one that isn't a piece of **** or a rolling rust bucket. He tried to get me to get the one he wanted for the longest time because the guy wanted to trade for a mid sized truck. I didn't want something that old.

Simple solution. Take the alternator off, see if there is any kind of visible part number. Go to the parts store with the alternator, and try to match it up as best as possible.

Yeah  Actually, we've looked at quite a few that were almost completely ready to be a DD. :-p

It has the black plastic cover...so I would assume it's the m50.

lownslow95 01-06-2009 12:12 PM

My mom has the same engine in her z3. But it looks like its hard to find where anything is in that engine bay.
