I bought this car back in 2007 with the intentions on turbo charging it. I figured it would take me about a year or so to get it running, but I was off by about 3 years lol. I'm tying to keep this first page updated with all of the current mods on the car, but for now the car has a stock engine until I can better learn to tune. Before even getting it boosted I'm on my 2nd turbo "kit" and have changed plans a few times. It is finally running and I couldn't be happier with the results so far.

Suspension: Progress drop springs on KYB's
Full poly bushings
SPS 17.5mm rear sway bar
American racing 16x7 wheels, Hankook RS3 tires (225/50R16)
Stock 15" steelies for drag radials.

Turbo kit:bought used

Besides being dirty the frame and all is damn near rust free which is awesome being a PA car from 94.

got the temp motor in on thursday, just need to bolt up a few more things, throw the axles in and some seats and drive it down the road. Should be getting the new motor in a few weeks and will be dropping that in after i get the MS controlling fuel at least.

She moved under her own power yesterday for the first time in over a year. Here's some updated pics, it will be going under the knife cosmetically very soon, getting some touch ups, different wheels, and lowered at least.

You need to throw some 225/45/16's on there or something man.

Or at least if you're going with stockers, 205's like Ian used to run. You're gonna get nowhere with those 185/195's.

I really wish i could make it, but it isn't tagged or inspected yet, not to mention N/A till i get my Tec2 and new motor set up so right now it has an interfooler lol. I'm too lazy to un-mount it as it's bolted on pretty good.

Don't worry man, when i'm ready to put down some real power I'll pick up something around 7" wide rim with a 225 width tire. Those are just on so i could move it around.

By the way, it leaks lots of oil just like any normal saturn, and I'm getting rid of the Megasquirt in favor of a Tec2 that i'm picking up for an awesome price.

Well after unclogging my sunroof drains it still leaks. Looks like around the glass the metal is all rusted out and water is getting between the seal and the glass. Seeing what i can do about that at the moment. Also gunna pick up a new valve cover gasket cause the one that's on there is junk along with the valve cover and it just eaks everywhere. Good thing i have another one sitting around that i know is staight.

Anyway, some new pics. Got the lowering springs on recently, so here's her new stance.

I think i want to re-route my oil feed line. It has a 45* bend on the block side right now and the 90* at the turbo and I'm running it between the 2nd and 3rd intake mani runners. Probably going to put the line around the side of the IM and switch around the fittings so it's not rubbing on my wastegate.

nice to see some more progress, did i sell you that block? lol

i bought unofficiallybobs turbo coupe last week. started taking it apart the other day. hopefully in 2 weeks i'll atleast have the dohc 5spd in the wagon, then the turbo a little after that.

oh yeah, i hate you for having those rods and pistons for sale. i don't wanna build the motor, but i keep seeing that post, its killing me

rhd 300whp saturn wagon? hmmm

no not that one, the 2.2L? i had one and i forget who i sold it to

no offense, but i really wish you would have built an na/spray engine out of that block. the 2.2 would have been able to get into the low 200s

No, the 2.2L came from a dude in Florida. Nitrous is cool, but i wanna make more than a LLO can with a strong build and spray. I'm not gunna make 350 on spray.

you could have hit 350 easy, a 150 shot would easily have gotten you there. its cool tho, it means someday maybe i can still try to do it.

Gotta love the Garrett.

One thing i love about these cars is all the room to work on them. That and the lack of vacuum lines is wonderful.

Yeh, maybe i'll just run 20psi and a 100 shot and make 450.

I've been using nitrous for many years. Use to run a 500-700hp staged setups on all my Bowties. With forged internals I could easily pull 400hp out of that motor.

350 was gonna be my goal, and after i had my fun with that i was gonna go for 400. 400 in that car would be a nightmare lol. i still really want to build that car.

my worry was that a 200 shot would just be to much torque even for the forged rods to handle.

Downpipe clears everything nicely. It's hard to tell, but i have about 1/4" clearance at the swaybar. Should be fine with all the poly engine and suspension bushings. More clearance than my ****ty pacesetter header on my DD.

Wanted to bump this for a few things. I put on my new oil pan and well.... the **** hit my downpipe, so no i'll be doing up another oil pan with a new/longer return line.

Also my new motor shows up tomorrow!!! That will be here as well as my Tec2, so I should be working on starting to install that along with my wideband and boost gauge.

I love it too, enough that i may be picking up a twin in a little bit. If so I can get some black seats in the thing.

I got some new 10AN line off a fellow member here to rerun my oil drain, my downpipe hit it before. Gotta get the oil pan bung chopped off soon so i can that all done.

PunkboySL2
12-19-2009, 01:00 AM
well not much going on with this as of late, been slacking a bit. Finally just went and got a new oil pan bung, just gotta get it welded in then make a new drain line since i got some more -10an stainless lines. Still waiting for the rest of my parts though.... had some dumb paypal dispute thing going on. anyway once i get the oil pan done and my DP back on then i gotta setup my tec2 whenever that shows up and tune this thing. It has a stock clutch in it right now so when it roasts that off i'll pull the motor in drop in the good one. I only plan on running about 7psi through the stocker though so it should hold for a while while i'm getting the hang of tuning. Might also pick up an oil cooler and a better rad since the stock rad in there is leaking a little bit. I also need to get a better battery tie down, it's not in there very good at the moment. Gunna try and make something up with some metal brackets intead of the strap that's holding it down to be safer.

PunkboySL2
01-14-2010, 11:43 AM
Well haven't updated this in a bit as I've been slacking from doing any work on my cars, but I've decided to do away with the log manifold in favor of something a bit better flowing. As soon as I can get some more cash I'm picking up Scotty's(former turbo saturn owner on sixthsphere.com) ramhorn manifold/3" downpipe that's rockin' a 44mm tial wastegate. This thing is gunna rip with the built motor. I hope you don't mind scotty, i'm stealing a pic or two.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a138/scottyr/P9060013.jpg

Really this is what i wanted from the get-go, but I'm gunna be a lot happier running this setup. I just don't think the log will flow so well after 20 psi and with the 2.5" downpipe. Anything under that woulda been great, but I just wanna go all out with this car.

One other reason I haven't worked on the car is cause of the cold weather, the car is frozen in my yard and won't start (i think the starter is going and I know the battery is pretty much shot). Even after jumping it, it wouldn't turn over, but i'll try again friday since it'll be a little warmer.

gtsiawd96
01-14-2010, 11:51 AM
Nice manifold. Most wont expect that opening the hood. Is that side exhaust/downpipe too?

PunkboySL2
01-14-2010, 05:06 PM
nah, it's gunna run like any usual downpipe right under the oil pan. I plan on having a 3" side exit fabbed up so it'll dump right before the passenger's side rear wheel. I think it'll work much better since I'm aiming for 350+whp from this setup. Just gunna have to tune the **** out of it and run enough boost through it and hope the head doesn't lift or anything haha. I should be ok though with the GE block and the arp headstuds.

Now I gotta find a new turbo, the one I have right now is a 4 bolt outlet, oh well.

PunkboySL2
09-21-2010, 02:22 PM
long due for an update here. Trying to get **** mocked up outside of the car so that I can drop eveything in. I will need to bend my dipstick to the side since it hits the manifold and turn my T-stat around since that hits the downpipe. I'm almost done fabbing the throttle body up so that I can use the stock cable. Also a pic of my custom AMR radiator. Anyway, more pictures.

No big updates, but it's getting close to being put back together. I did finish up the throttle body linkage which I had to modify some more and I still want to clean it up a tad. I still need a TPS since they're totally different from the saturn setups. I'm also probably going to run an IAC blockoff since i'm not sure if my stock IAC will work correctly, but I'm going to try it and see what happens. My trans should be here tomorrow, but I'm probably going to have to reschedule with Fedex since the shipper put down to require a signature at time of delivery. I was able to find an 01' MP2 (sohc trans, longer gears) with a welded diff pin for $75, not bad at all. I will be swapping in my LSD before I put that on though. I also finally got the new oil pan slapped on the temp motor, I'm going to wait till the morning to torque the bolts down all the way though so the rtv can dry up a little bit more.

Wanted to just bump this up. I got my trans so now I just need to swap the diff. Also I gotta take a look at my flywheel and decide if I should just buy a new one or reuse the stocker that I have laying around. I'll be using a brand new ACT 6puck with it. I'm going to use my IAC blockoff since the one that I have currently is pretty much beat and isn't functioning properly.

I plan on at least getting the trans done next week (only about a 1 hour job) and bolting it onto the motor. As soon as our garage is finished then I can park the coupe inside and drop the drivetrain in. Then it's a matter of picking up some more intercooler piping/couplers and a few random pieces so I can get the car running. After I do that I'll be purchasing the Megasquirt and getting to at least fuel tuning.

Thirdly I need to empty the damn car out. Pretty much right now it's being used as a storage shed for all of my extra saturn parts (and I have a lot of those). I plan on giving it a decent cleaning and detailing inside and out. I'm considering painting it this spring as well since it's been sitting out for so long that the clear has started to bubble a little in 2 smallish spots. Also the front bumper and trunk lid are rattle canned at the moment.

Getting the drivetrain buttoned up. Still need a new driver's side knuckle so I can get the car back on the ground. After that it'll be time to roll it into the garage and finally get it back into running order. I was finally able to get sensors for the throttle body as well as my IAC blockoff and a few other small things. Getting closer.

Was bored and decided that yeh, it should be painted as well as my bottom motor mount that was raw and had been sitting and was starting to get some rust. The head and valve cover are still relatively dirty, but since this is just the temp motor I'll probably just leave em.

Scored some good condition leather stuff at the JY for pretty cheap. Passenger's seat needs a tad more cleaning and I'm going to work more on conditioning them although they are pretty soft for being as old as they are in a car that had a leaking sunroof.

There are two saturns making just south of 500whp on a stock trans with a Quaife. The gears in these cars are actually very stout, but the diffs are weak.

Stock engine internals at the moment. When I get a decent tune going and get some miles on the car I'll drop in the forged/sleeved engine. It's getting close, it sucks because money is the only thing holding me back at this point. I asked for a wiring harness and tuning cable for the Megasquirt for Christmas so that should help me out a bit.

Thats cool... my first car was a 95 sc1.... They're slow as balls and I never woulda expected a saturn to hold power reliably.. i only had the sohc motor though

the SOHC's are bad. 95 and on were MPFI... I learned to drive on my dad's 92 SL1. 91-94 are TBI set ups. All 85 HP of fail...

Nice glad to see more work is getting done on it.

Yeh, the SOHC saturns unlike hondas are only an 8 valve setup with no so efficient flowing intake and head. I've only ever seen one that put down decent power, but his car was boosted and well put together.

I'm getting my knuckle back this weekend so I'm hoping to have the car back on the ground in a few days which means I can roll that sucker in the garage and get some REAL work done.

I made some very important progress yesterday. Got the knuckle back on the car and towed it into the driveway. Got all of the spare parts out of the car (it was packed!) as well as vacuumed the carpet and wiped down a bunch of the interior. I may pull the carpet as for some reason the sunroof started leaking again and the carpet is a tad wet. I need to get a working sunroof relay in it so I can figure out what's going on. What I'll be working on next is getting the battery properly mounted in the trunk, throwing in my seats then dropping in the drive train. I'm going to run on stock PCM for initial startup and just to drive it around the block and make sure it stays together. Next paycheck I should be able to afford the Megasquirt, but since I already have the harness I will start wiring that in. *more pics next update*

I reinstalled my trunk this morning and got my vacuum block in the mail so I got that installed on the firewall as well. Still got some cleaning up to do and whatnot, but I'm glad to be making progress.

i used to race these on dirt circle track and i absolutley killed them as well as everyone else did that had a saturn we ran a 3/8 mile oval and u put the sohc trans in ans leave it in second pop the limiter right before the turn back out of it and get back on and ur gone, u could walk the dog on the hondas eclipses even the v6 probes were no match. GRest job on ur project and build i think these cars r awesome the power to weight is what makes these cars fun

Nice, I know there's a few guys who have done circle tracks with these cars on my Saturn forum. Car is only about 2400 lbs so with over 300whp it should be pretty darn quick.

For now I'm going to aim for just making 210~220 on the stock motor. It really can't take too much more than that before the rods start bending or you get a little detonation and the pistons go bye bye.

It runs! Well it at least idles.

My fuel rail was leaking when I tried getting it to start this morning, so after struggling with getting one of the o-rings back in place (there are two that sit behind where the fuel rail clips into place) it doens't leak any more, woot.

After that I got see the sucker start up for the first time in about 8 months. It idled too high, smoked and leaked some oil, but it ran haha. I didn't have any coolant in it yet so I shut it down early. I've got some vacuum leaks to take care of as well actually ordering some more vacuum lines and fittings for the brake booster and for the vacuum port off of the intake manifold. I think I can also attribute part of the idle issue to the throttle body since I'm not sure the saturn pcm can correctly control the IAC and TPS although the IAC plugged right in and the TPS had the same wiring colors. I'm going to be making an intake for the turbo so I can run the PCV to a catch can and to the intake. I did manage to get a few pictures, but I left the cord for my camera at my parent's house so I'll have to wait to upload those.

Still to hook up before I can get it moving under it's own power: axles, trans fluid, clutch slave cylinder, new vacuum lines, radiator and hoses. Wow, i think that's about it. I should have it mobile on monday since I'll be heading back there to work on it then after I get the tie rods on the wagon. Just happy to finally make some solid progress.

PunkboySL2
01-28-2011, 12:32 AM
Well I pretty much have most of my issues resolved. I found out that my high idle was not from the vacuum lines, but actually the IAC. I believe that the Saturn pcm can not correctly control the chevy IAC. I was able to pull out the pintle and stick the IAC back in place and now it idles purdy. I have a few picture updates, but they aren't the final results. Just imagine some rad hoses, the radiator and another vacuum line or two. On a final note, I've never driven a car that didn't have a stock clutch, so the first time with the ACT was all wtf holy **** lulz. Then I got in my wagon expecting the clutch to grab hard right away, alas, I was disapoint.

02-04-2011, 02:19 AM
Well I actually did get the car running and found out that it was leaking coolant somewhere in the back of the car. Turns out the intake manifold is leaking, joyess. The weld on the coolant drain wasn't too nice, so I took a dremel to it, smoothed it out a bit and coated it with JB weld. I'm going to see how much it will cost to have the flanged machined because I took a straight edge to it and it's not totally flat so that could possibly be at fault as well. Most likely it will be dropped off at a machine shop ASAP, then taken and sanded down a bit and repainted since it got messed up from having gas/coolant/brake clean all over it. I also still need to modify my throttle cable bracket a bit.

PunkboySL2
02-22-2011, 12:30 AM
Unfortunately I had to throw back on the stock intake manifold. I'm not too happy about it, but it's going to make life easier for now and I can get the car running sooner and it will do fine to support my low initial power goal. I did port the opening a tad so I can use a Geo Storm throttle body which has a much larger opening and a few mm bigger throttle plate. Conveniently it bolts right on to the stock manifold and I can use the stock sensor plugs. I did get it running again today, at least moving under it's own power. Luckily I have no more oil leaks and just one small coolant leak that I should be able to care of no problem. A few days ago I replaced the slightly leaking, dirty valve cover with a much cleaner (baller) painted one which cleaned up the engine bay hugely. I need to fab up a small piece of IC piping since they throttle body doesn't come up along side of the engine any more. After that I'm going to wire in the megasquirt and get to tuning.

I got my new wires and plugs so I'll be throwing them on tomorrow. I need to pick up some better condition ignition coils. The ones I have now are a little beat up and I think are causing some spark cut out issues, but that could be from the battery sitting for so long and not producing enough power.

I also finally got a new sunroof control (in great shape) so I can open that up and figure out why it's leaking yet again. Hoping that after I wire in the MS I can throw the interior mostly back together and make the car slightly more comfortable to drive around.

So I picked up the IC piping from my buddy, but it was going to be too much of a PITA to make it fit so I just went to the local parts store and picked up some 2.5" steel exhaust pipe for my last piece. I haven't installed it yet, but I still have other work to worry about first anyway.

Engine bay, just about ready to go.

thanks, I'm REALLY hoping to have it at RT's dyno day.

EDIT: got to working on it more today and after I get a few more parts in to fix the suspension and pick up some more vacuum hose it'll be time for tuning. I got the intake pipe all setup, drilled it for a vacuum source and added a fitting for the PCV system and for the AIT sensor. I finished the wiring for the wideband as well as the boost gauge so they are now lit and functioning. I took it for a quick jaunt down the street and nothing leaks! woot! I was having a problem with the oil feed line not sealing so I cut it with a very small cut-off wheel on a dremel with some tape and it worked great.

PunkboySL2

Got my parts in from Silicone Intakes so now I have relocated my vacuum block and my intercooler piping is a little less ghetto. I got the MS power setup and for now it will reside in the glovebox unless I figure out a place that I'd rather mount it. I also got my new tie-rod ends in, but the tie rod nut on the drivers side is STUCK! I was able to replace the end though, so at least that is taken care of. Friday morning I'll be making another JY run for a few odds and ends as well as hopefully a new knuckle and my pass side brake bracket slider is just about totally frozen up so I'm probably going to need to cut it off and just replace the bracket since the actual caliper itself is good. I may have someone coming over that day to help get the MS running the car, but if not I may try and tackle that at the beginning of next week. The 26th is coming up quickly so hoping to make it to the benefit dyno.

I still haven't gotten around to working out the CAD drawing unfortunately, but soon enough I should have that project going.

PunkboySL2

Ordered a cheapy polished aluminum catch can tonight for finish up my pcv system. Should have that next week. I downloaded and got a registered version of Tuner Studios so I'm going to bring my laptop home tomorrow and get the car running on the MS. Got a few hours to play around with it, so after I get it it idle and run on stock injectors I'll be throwing in the 720's and making more than 100whp lol.

If I can get it all set by the 26th it will be dyno'd and if not I'm going to dyno it at a later date. Here's my to-do list:

-Wheel bearing, brake caliper bracket, tagged, inspected, aligned, fab the wastegate dump. It's going to be tough haha. Wastegate dump isn't a must, but it would be real nice. I also need to buy some bends to get the side exit fabbed up. I already bought v-band flanges and a clamp. I need piping, a few bends, and a muffler.

edit: ok so I don't have any gaskets on the turbo exhaust side, so those are on order now and I also went and ordered a magnaflow race muffler (3" in and out, 14" long, 5" body). I am going to see what it sounds like with just that exiting out of the side. I don't mind if it's relatively loud, I just want it to flow good.

Tried to get it running on the MSII on friday with no luck. I was not getting a tach signal so the injectors were not firing. I believe it was because my ignition wire (for the tach signal, it is a regular wire with a coax lining) was not all spliced together correctly. Hopefully tomorrow I can get it re-wired and getting signal correctly.

edit: Got someone to make a better tune for me from his car. I am going to check out the IGN wire tomorrow, hopefully get tach signal and upload the new tune and it should be moving again. If it runs alright the big injectors will be going in and I'll try and tune the VE table so I can make boost :)

PunkboySL2
03-22-2011, 12:23 AM
Ok, so I fixed my tach wire signal issue and the car idles now. It was shutting off on me so I played with the VE table a bit and got it to idle pretty damn good. I also threw on my Geo Storm throttle body and IAC blockoff at the same time. This friday I should be installing the 720cc's and giving it a street tune. I'm pretty excited now that it is actually running on the megasquirt. As soon as I can get pretty good tune going I hope to get it setup for spark as well since I'm running fuel only right now. That should give me a good bit more power out of the car especially in the higher RPMs. It doesn't look like I'll be making it with this car to the dyno day unfortunately since it's coming up this saturday. I should, at least by the weekend, have the car tagged and insured so I can get some stickers on it and start driving it.

I was going to get some pictures up finally, but I couldn't find my camera.

Little update. Installed a rad fan today since I didn't have one in there yet, fixed the brake caliper so now I can stop (lol) and tweaked the MSII a little more today. Still having a cut-out issue when I first give the car gas. It seems to jump very lean, but it's fine once you go past 10% throttle and it's not quite as bad once the car is more warmed up and there is no issue when the car is cruising. Once I get that straightened out the big injectors go in and I tune for boost. I did however get the VE table tuned so that it is not so rich under partial throttle cruising since it was running around 12:1. The car seems like it's running good and it's nice and peppy, but I haven't had it over 1/2 throttle past 3500 rmps yet since I don't want to make boost and melt my pistons.

So tonight was the night, she popped my boost cherry! I threw in the 720ccs, made some VE and Accel adjustments so it idles pretty damn good and pulls hard under boost. I also already blew off a coupler doing a second gear pull haha. It does still run a little rich all around so I'm still working on that, but it's a little tough doing it by myself. Hopefully I can get the wideband wired into the MS and do some datalogging as well as use the AutoTune feature and get it running better.

I may take you up on the paint at some point soon. Right now I'm more concerned with just getting it tuned, not to mention insured, properly tagged and inspected. It looks like it's going to rain friday, so I'll probably work on getting the car put together the rest of the way interior wise and doing some other stuff like installing the front air dam to push some more air to the rad. I'm pretty much just plain excited, I've never had a car that was "fast" before so I really can't wait to work on it further and get it on the road.

I got a good amount done today an I'll be getting more done tomorrow. Today: fixed the bad wheel bearing, hooked up the speed sensor (needed a custom setup using the ABS sensors due to the LowSaturn LSD), wired the wideband into the MS2, installed an air dam using one from a cobalt, threw in the fender liners and reinstalled the dash top.

Tomorrow's plans: get a pass side mirror from the JY, fix some rattles, try and get the alignment a little better, fab a dump tube for the wastegate, and do some more tuning.

haha sounds exciting

I found out tonight that I totally ****ed up the wheel bearing install so I'm just going to go junkyarding for a good front knuckle and swap the whole thing out since I don't want to waste another 35 bucks on a bearing that I'm going to destroy. I finally played around with the auto-tune feature which seems to work pretty well. It did a decent job adjusting the fuel tables and AFR's while cruising are in the high 14's/low 15's and under boost is low to mid 12's right where it should be. I got a rid of some of the rattles coming from the dash, the front speakers and speaker covers as well as the center console. Also I installed another ground wire from the trans to the body since I only had one from the TAM mount to the firewall and I think it's probably a good idea to make sure the motor is properly grounded in this particular car.

PunkboySL2
04-12-2011, 07:04 PM
I finally got the battery mounted better. I slapped a marine battery case in the trunk and made a stock battery fit inside of it so it mounts nicely now and the wires are now hidden under the cardboard. I also got a new knuckle assembly so that went in as well as two tires that aren't totally shot and the car isn't experiencing the "shimmy" it was earlier which I had thought were bad struts.

The other day I was playing with the tune a bunch and I don't know what the hell I did with the Accel enrichments, but they must have been jacked up. The car was either running way lean or way rich, misfring, and just barely driveable. I thought it was something hardware wise, but to be sure I loaded an old tune when I know the car was running nice and bam it runs good again. Did a little VE tuning and it's pretty good right now. I'm not going to touch the Accel enrichments again till I know what I'm doing more or till someone else can help me out. Another thing I need to do with the MS is to get the IAC controlled. It's getting annoying opening up the IAC blockoff every time I want to start the car and then waiting for it to warm up a bit and having to close it back up.

On another note I tore down the extra steering rack I had laying around and got that depowered so Friday I should be able to throw that in the car as well (hopefully) get the exhaust welded up. I also have tires on the way so those should be on either by this weekend or the next. Then I need to fix up that other rear subframe I have laying around so I can swap that out and put on the rear disc brakes and SPS 17.5mm rear sway bar and make the car feel like it should. Hoping to get some picture updates friday.

I'll update this post tomorrow with pictures of the tires mounted and of the mostly finished exhaust. I'll just say right now that the tire fitment is delicious. Damn, nice build. At first yo'd think, "who builds a Saturn", but you've put a lot of hard work into it. I can appreciate what you've done since I've built up my escort. I know what it's like to get dogged on for building up a domestic compact car. My one buddy hada nicely done up SC2 back in the day but traded it in on a Ion Redline. Anyway, nice build and keep up the good work sir.

thanks guys, i made it to the sloppy mechanic's dyno day and made 202whp on my first run so I was stoked. I wasn't expecting to make quite much so I'm happy and it gives me a baseline to start with.

Yep I'm real happy with it and that's on a bone stock motor with (who knows how many) miles with the only mods being a bigger throttle body. It started breaking up a tad around 6800 rpm so I may check my plug gap again and go a little tighter if they're around 0.035 like I think they are currently. This is also a stock ignition system being controlled by the stock ECU which I know doesn't really like to be pushed much past stock redline which is 6500 rpm so that could be the issue also.

One other thing I'm going to look at is crank-case ventilation. While the car was on the dyno today I watched a bit of blow by coming from the crankcase filter so I'm not sure if that's pretty normal, so along with the fuel pressure sensor I hope to get an oil pressure sensor installed as well to make sure that isn't going too high.

Well a little over a week ago I tried to upload newer firmware to the MegaSquirt in an effort to get rid of this little lean blip I've been having, but I must have failed badly because the car just won't run now. It says that it's injecting fuel, but I'm getting nothing. Today I'm borrowing someone else's MSII to see if that will run my car to make sure that the pcm is where the issue is coming from.

PunkboySL2

Since the car is down for a bit longer (hopefully no more than 2 weeks longer) I got around to some maintenance stuff with some upgrades. New subframe with full poly bushings and a 17.5mm adjustable sway bar :)

Out with the old and in with the new.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j392/PunkboySL2/002-4.jpg

Other plans are to swap out the steering rack and replace it with the stock rack that came with the car (quicker ratio). I'm don't think I'm going to worry about fully depowering this one since it didn't feel much different vs. looped lines anyway.

PunkboySL2

So I didn't get a chance to put it together today like I had planned, but I will be doing that tomorrow. Got my RacingBeat miata endlinks, duralast gold rear pads, rotors should be here tomorrow, needs a coolant fill and trans fluid change and should be ready to roll. Fingers crossed for no coolant leaks! (replaced the intake manifold with the other I had which had leaked coolant previously, but should be all fixed now)

Still need to finish up some wiring stuff. I need a better soldering iron so I can solder all my connections as well as hook up my IAC since I was using a blockoff, but now I don't have one for the big throttle body since that is different. Luckily the IAC plugs right in, but I still need to program it so it functions correctly.

After that it's a bit more tuning then paint time!

PunkboySL2

I've welded NOTHING on the car. The downpipe is the worst, it's really bad, but it doesn't leak. Everything else is half decent and it was all done for free so I can't complain at all.

I'm expecting solid low 13's as it sits if I can get traction in 1st/2nd. It seems to hook pretty good with these tires though.

Spawne32
07-24-2011, 05:09 PM

PunkboySL2
07-24-2011, 06:40 PM
It tips the scales at 2300 lbs, and walked all over my buddies fox body with headerback exhaust (no cats), intake, 4.10s, and some weight reduction. From what I've read that should be good for a mid/high 13 sec car.

I will say that I'm not an experienced 1/4 mile driver so I don't think I, myself, will get it to run that fast, but we'll see. I don't see it hitting 12's at it sits, but eventually I'm aiming for an 11 sec quarter mile.

Also it actually was only running 5psi when it made 202 (found out the other night when I swapped the wastegate spring). I'm currently running 7psi and a MUCH better flowing intake manifold so I should be making a few more hp.

Spawne32
07-24-2011, 11:06 PM

07-24-2011, 11:31 PM
http://www.edmunds.com/saturn/s-series/1994/features-specs.html

according to edmunds, a 1994 saturn coupe has a curb weight of 2388lbs. IE: full of gas + all fluids. Now joey isn't exactly a fatty so I'd be willing to bet his car + driver is no more than 2550-2600lbs. 12's shouldn't be too difficult to get into with your current power output. Traction on the other hand might be a little trickier.

PunkboySL2
07-30-2011, 11:49 AM
My other saturn coupe, same options with an auto trans was just over 2400 lbs so this has to be in the 2300lb range since all emissions, a/c and power steering have been removed along with some of the interior. It also doesn't have a full length exhaust.

Need to take some more pictures. Started removing the bottom pin stripe (the top one is painted on), wheels are now black and new paint is in the works as well.

Aaron thanks, and I'll defintely let you know on that. It's stainless, but it's cheap stainless, 304 I believe. I was on a budget when I was building the exhaust and I still need to actually finish the hangers on it so I'm sure you could help me out with that.

Now it revs nice and smooth with so much hesitation and I can start it up and rev it right away without it wanting to bog out and shut off.

Car is still sanded :/ Need to get on finishing paint asap. I also need to get a pic or two up, but the car made it to North Carolina and back for the annual sixthsphere.com Tail of The Dragon trip. I only ran into one issue during the whole weekend and that happened to be that I blew the oil seal on the turbo. It blew while decelerating into a corner too which was odd. Luckily no other issues popped up and I was able to drive it the 11 hours back home without losing much oil at all. I'm probably going to pull it off as soon as the car is painted and replace the parts with real garrett stuff and also add an oil restrictor (wasn't running one, not a good idea) so it doesn't happen again.

The next project after getting that stuff done is to add power steering back onto the car. Non-power steering is ok for a lot of normal driving, but after driving the dragon and knowing that I'd like to auto-x it at some point I really feel like getting power steering back would be a big plus. Also I think my inner tie rods (at least one) need to be replaced since I was getting a nice clunk on really tight corners, though it didn't seem to affect where the car was steering mid corner. Since I can't fit a stock saturn pump back on (though that would be ideal) I'm going to work on retrofitting an MR2 electronic pump on the car like this : http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=847818

Car still isn't painted lol. For an update though I got the turbo replaced and everything seems to be working good again. The new setup is another ebay 50 trim mated with a .48ar exhaust side and this time I got a restrictor feed fitting to keep the new seals alive and happy. I really need to get a sound clip because it sounds like a modded evo now haha. It spools a tad quicker now which is cool. I also fixed my fan setup. Now I have dual fans up front and I made a shroud out of a big plastic container lid. Seems to work great and it isn't melting which is very important.

The body of the car is wet sanded and buffed, bumpers got primered last night and we were able to fix all the nicks/dings and stuff. The look real good now and the trunk panel is fully shaved and we are going to clear the tails, backup lights and front side markers. Car will premier it's new color at the Sloppy dyno day this Sunday *excited face*

Otherwise I've been on the lookout for a new (real) turbo as well as some new wheels for next year. There's a few sets I have my eyes on and I think I'm staying with 16x7's since there is a much larger selection for wheels that fit my offset need rather than 16x8's. As far as the turbo is concerned I'm really looking into an SC61 or a holset HX35. Both would be able to make plenty of power and I'll be able to rev them real high without loosing power.

edit: added some preview pics, tails are candy coated and cleared, cleared side markers.

Hitting Atco tomorrow. We're renting the track so I should be able to get a ton of runs in baring no major breakdowns. I'm bringing tools and extra axles so I should be ok. I'm hoping for a 13.5 on street tires, I'm pretty sure I can get it there.

PunkboySL2
11-08-2011, 11:10 PM
Well I need to upload a picture of the time sheet, but my best personal run was a 13.46 @ 106 with a 2.2 60'. Not too bad for spinning the tires pretty bad in first and second. My buddy ran a 13.31 @107 then the next run the axle snapped on the launch.

For next season we're going to fab up some removable traction bars since the control arms on these cars suck and we were getting a bunch of wheel hop. With that and slicks we'll have no problem breaking into the 12's running 11psi like I was today.

We stuck it on the flatbad and got the trans out of the car and completely disassembled in 2 hours lol. My buddy is going to push out the chunk of axle stuck in the diff and press on some new bearings for me since those are getting worn. We're going to keep running it on the stock motor for now, then when I get a chance over the winter, drop in the built motor.

Thanks man, I'm amped to see how it does.

So the axle seal went I believe so I decided to say **** it and just strip it down instead of wasting more time fixing dumb stuff. The front end of the car is pretty much completely stripped out right now. Over the next 2 months I'm going to be doing a wire tuck as well as partially shaving and then painting the engine bay. Trying to get this thing going proper and taking my time with a lot of little stuff that I want to get done. I gotta figure out where I'm pulling out the wiring and where I'm going to run everything. I have some time in the morning so hopefully I'll get around to pulling out some more stuff. I'm for sure deleting the windshield washer stuff and I'm also debating whether or not I'm going to delete the heat or not. The car pretty much only gets driven when it's nicer out, but I still drive when it's in the low 50's out and in the rain sometimes so being able to clear the windshield inside would be nice still.

Thanks dude. I'm keeping the wipers themselves, but getting rid of everything else. These cars in 91-92 had the nozzles on the hood, so the cowl is cleaner and I may even swap one of those one as well.

Today I pulled the dash half apart and I plan on pulling it out all the way by the end of the week so I can figure out where I'm jamming all my wiring. Also need to fix my cluster since the odometer doesn't work and I may replace the bulbs with LEDs while I'm in there.

I made more progress tonight. Both main harnesses are in the cabin and ready for labeling/cutting/lengthening. Me and Hans got the dash completely out of the car and I pulled out the MSII, harness and all the wiring for the wideband, boost gauge and everything else. I've decided that I don't want to use the factory harness anymore where I had the wires spliced so the MS harness will be ran into the bay and I'll hack up the factory harness so I have all of the pigtails for everything. I still need to pull the rest of the a/c stuff out, but I'm now debating keeping the heat. It would be nice to have just in case and I can clean up the lines for it and make it look better and blend in relatively easy. Also I'm really thinking about going to the 91-92 steering wheel/column since I just removed my airbag sensor anyway and there is none in the passenger's side. Either that or figure out a hub adapter and go to an aftermarket steering wheel which would be baller.

This time around I'm taking my time to keep everything more neat and organized and do it the way it should have been done from the beginning.

Heat is staying, but all of the A/C components have now been removed. I pulled the whole a/c and heater unit out last night and gutted what I needed to and cut a hole to run my wiring. This should make it real easy to run the wires through the firewall, then I just have to try and sligtly seal the box back up. I'm ready to start extending wires, just need to go out and buy some wiring and heat shrink wrap.

Got in the garage for a bit today. About 1/4 of the way done with extending the front harness. Soldering still sucks, but I'm starting to get it down a little better. Going to run this harness through the fender where the other one was.

I did get the headlight harness completed on the engine bay side and ran into the cabin. I also got the main engine harness pulled through the firewall which went rather smoothly. Now I need to decide if I'm going to cut that up and use it to hook into the MS harness or if I'll build a secondary stand alone harness just for the MS.

After talking with a few people I'm going a new direction with my wheels. Was going to keep the 16s, but go wider and use same tires, but instead I'm saving for a new setup:

Hm, are you going to have to modify the fenders in any way? I know when I had my SL2 it was a PIA with wheels because of the limited widths.

PunkboySL2
12-30-2011, 01:19 PM
Just going to have to trim the liners and maybe inside the fenders a tad. Right now the 225 RS3s clear everything fine with no rubbing so I really don't see it being much of an issue. There's lots of room since it's still just on drop springs.

If you've seen JW's car he's running 17x9 Rotas on 235/40R17 R1Rs. He has less room for them being on coilovers and they stick out a tad, but not terribly.

heh, well they're attached to a pretty gay person so it makes sense.

Found out I can get a full set of Toyo R1R's for under $500 shipped. I'm going with 235/40R17. I'm stoked on picking those up since they should be a little upgrade over the RS3's. For anyone who doesn't know what they look like:

http://www.wheelsnext.com/images/wheels/large/toyo_R1R.jpg

I also finished up the wiring harness into the engine bay last night. Definitely getting the soldering thing down a lot better. Now Just need to finish up the headlight harness and I can start reassembling the dash and then get to shaving/painting the bay.

Hopefully with the new motor and all the mods it'll spool this bad boy soon enough to really make some power. This should support up to a bit over 500whp so I guess my goals just went up a tad.

I actually broke my pelvis about 3 weeks ago and I'm not allowed to walk without using a walker or crutches (can't put any weight on my left leg) for another 2 months so unfortunately until then I really can't get much of anything done to the car. Once I can move around again I'm going into overdrive to get the car put back together. I still have a lot of work to do just to get it together, then a bunch of custom work to the front subframe so I can hopefully eliminate the wheel hop that plagues this platform.

PunkboySL2
04-10-2012, 01:02 AM
It's got a custom LSD. There's guys running bone stock trans and making 300whp with no issues, but I wanted something a little tougher to start with. I'm thinking at some point I'm going to have the gears strengthened (i think cryo treated is the way to go?) and go with some custom axles since I already snapped one my first time I had it at the track.

PunkboySL2

Small update, I have finally been getting back to the car and dosing some reassembly under the dash. I streched the last bit of wires needed to relocate the fuse box to the passenger's side of the dash. I still have to actually get it mounted, but I at least know where it's going and that it does fit. Got some of the climate control stuff put back together, but it's a little tough with broken hip to move around too good. I also removed the headlight assemblies to make painting the engine bay easier and I also want to get the headlight brackets cleaned up and painted since they're getting some corrosion here and there.

wouldn't ****ing a fat bitch theoretically be more safe than a skinny bitch? being fat, there would be more absorbance during the contact of the trust. the less dense fat would allow for more time to disperse the force applied.

hahaha, the funny thing is my buddy tells everyone that's how I broke it too. I actually broke my pelvis riding bmx. I missed on a footplant and fell from about 6 ft up and landed on a weird angle stiff legged. Maybe I should upload the x-ray pic I got with the plate and screws.

Too bad that turbo is a tad different then what I want. I would love a full v-band setup and to get rid of the bolt on business though. If I had a bit more displacement I would consider that one.

I have been able to pull the headlight assemblies apart over the past few days and I got one all in primer. I'm going to try and color match the bezel around the headlight and leave everything else black.

^That's what I was thinking Matt. I would really like the entire exhaust to be V-banded. So much simpler and easier to work on.

Thing is still completely apart. I've still been trying to get the wagon 100%, but it's close. I've also been doing work on the Ruckus since that blew up haha. I've actually been working on it the past few days. There's a slight chance it could be ready for the dyno day, but I doubt it so I'll probably bring up the wagon again. If it makes it I would say I'd probably only be running 11psi since it won't be too broken in quite yet.

Going out to the garage now to finish up the intercooler mounting and some wiring. Going to start ordering some missing small pieces this week.

Making necessary modifications to the intake. Since it split along the bottom where the pipe was cut apart and welded I'm going to have it sand blasted, welded properly, have a new water oulet fabbed up and use a coupler to hold the two pieces together. Now I can adjust the angle where the throttle body sits since I'd like it to run under my rad hose as it used to be angled up above it. I will probably have it powder coated as well as some other pieces. Slowly making progress!

Sweet progress, mang.

Question about the wheels. I was going to go with a 16x7 +40 for my little ****ter and run a similar setup to what you have on there now, but saw an S series with some 17x8.25 +0 527s that made me change my mind. Do the +25 527s still have this type of concave/is this the look you're going for? I want the concave of the +0s and I'm afraid they'll be like Grids in that they look silly in the wrong offset due to the formation of the wheel.

PunkboySL2
11-26-2012, 10:59 AM
Thanks dude. You know, I'm not sure on the wheels. I'm sure the +25 will still be concave, just not quite as much. I've only ever seen one picture of that car before, had no idea he was running +0 offset wheels. I'm pretty positive the lowest offset I've seen on an S-series is +20 and without a bunch of camber they stuck out way too far.

That might be a question to post of the stanceworks forum or maybe on here since I'm sure someone who actually owns the wheels could answer your question better. Right now I'm trying to take care of all the detail work before I dump all that money into my wheel/tire set up.

I thought the same thing about that car. I saw pictures but just recently found that writeup.

I totally feel you on the detail work. My S series is just a ****ty daily, but I think I'd like to run some AutoX events for fun so I was gonna grab some H&Rs and throw a decent tire under the car, so the +0 won't work as I'm going for function much like yourself.

If you decide to part ways with your current Wheel/Tire combo I may be interested over Winter, seeing as I need tires anyway.

It's a bit cold now, but I may try to make it out to the Pennsburg trails and see if I still got riding in me. I've almost sold my bike like 10 times; maybe there's a reason I haven't .

The blue wheels with the hankooks are on my buddies wagon as of now and I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to give em up lol, but I really like that tire which I have also run on my wagon and I know a few people who autocross and love them. Definitely recommend them over the Star specs or Azenis if they come in the size you're looking for.

I will be at the trails this weekend for sure if the weather holds out whether its cold or not, so I'll have to shoot u a PM or something.

New wheel test fit. These are 17x8 ET35. I think they fit perfect and should look great with the 235/40r17 Toyo R1Rs. Car should handle better without having the wheels at a lower offset and now I won't have to modify the fenders as much or run too much camber.

On a side note I got my turbo rebuilt only to realize that I've lost the backing plate to my compressor housing. I have no clue where it went and I'm kind of screwed without it so I'm working on sourcing one of those out.
