I have a guy wanting to buy my car. I'm in PA, car is registered/inspected/insured in PA, guy is from jersey. He keeps sayin all I have to do is sign the title over to him and he just has to take it to a place in jersey and have it registered. Is there any truth to this? I know that buying a car FROM jersey thats all you have to do, but I didn't know how it works this way? I called the notary/auto tags place that I do all my business through and they said he has to have a valid license and a proof of insurance. Any input here? Help is appreciated!

thats the old law, he will need to come to pa and go to a title/tag place with you. I sold my last 240 to a kid in NJ and my title lady told me that. Its a liability issue.

I'm in nj and bought my car from pa we just all went to the notary there to get it transferred over, if you have proof of insurance you can get a 30 day? Temp tag for like 5 bucks on top of the 20 dollar fee for everything else

I did the same, though it was a couple years ago. Went to a notary 5 minutes away, showed proof on insurance, got a 60 day temp tag and was on my way back home. Car was from PA as well.

he can do it that way, but you can also be liable since you will still technically own the car. so say he buys the car and never transfers it, then abandons it somewhere, you are responsible for it. your best bet would be at least to just do a notarized bill of sale and sign the title. this way you have proof saying he now owns it. it is easier for him to just take the title to NJ and do everything because he doesnt need to get a temporary registration. this is how i buy all my cars, but i would never just sell someone a car and just give them a signed title.

I didn't have anything either, I called up my insurance and they faxed it over to the notary. Took 5 minutes.

Well this kid doesn't have any insurance so I told him he needs to just get insurance cuz he's gonna have to do it anyways, and just ****in come down and get the car and do the temp registration and be done with it. I gotta call wiggins tomorrow and see if maybe we can say he is going to tow it home, and just transfer the title and he can register it when he gets home?

cancel ur insurance and registration on the car and let him deal with getting it back. Tell him to throw some old plates on there so he doesnt get pulled over.
I bought a car from PA towed it to jersey and just got it registered and insured with no issues.

All you have to do to protect your ass is go to a local notary in your area and have them put the car in his name (you'll need his full name/address/phone number) and then they notarize it and you go give him the car and title. If he never registers it in Jersey that's his problem and you have proof you transferred it out of your name should anyone try to come back to you. It also kind of insures he will register it in his name since he's already on the title and can never resell the car until it's officially in his name in Jersey. I know this for a fact because I was a notary here in PA for 10 years and I just sold my Civic to someone in Indiana this past week and it's exactly what I did.

So then all we have to do is transfer the title but say its getting towed and registered in jersey?

You can drive it out or tow it to him and then cancel your insurance/registration. I wouldn't recommend letting him drive it out of state without putting his own insurance on it prior. But that's up to you guys. Just don't get busted lmao.

I don't see why he wouldn't be able to pick it up and register it in NJ if you signed over the title. I've bought cars out of state and registered them once back home in PA without the original owner. The notary will just verify the VIN on the vehicle, insurance, and license and give the registration. I'd imagine it would be very similar in NJ.

Basically what the notary said was if he wants to legally drive it home, he must have insurance and a license and they'll issue a temporary whatever he needs to drive it home. If he were to have taken it on a trailer they don't need insurance and he would get the title but register it when he got home. Doesn't matter though cuz the guy flaked out. Bastardo!

Jersey does not require a notarized title to do the transfer and register the car.
