Ok, so in my quest to try and get myself into better shape, I started running a bit, mostly on turf on a local HS football feild, but w/ my shelltoes, it KILLS to run.

Anyone have recommendations for a decent running shoe for around $50 or so? I dont have too much money to spend, but need something that doesnt kill everything from my feet to my kees and back.

Also, any other suggestions on minor training to drop some wieght? Currently, I am approx. 220lbs, and looking to drop to around 190ish. I have started to try and eat better, and quit/cut back on some bad habits (smoking, beer, that stuff)?

Any help would be awesome guys.

I'd go with new balance or asics. I have flat feet and they were highly reccomended to me by 2 different podiatrists. They give the best support all around.

As far as losing weight..lots of cardio.

Go to a specialty running shoe store. Thats really the only place where you can get the best advice without making an appointment to see a podiatrist. They will measure your feet and have you do a few simple stretches and exercises to see how your feet are shaped and where you do and don't need support.

ive also played soccer almost all my life and agree with nike shox's. thats the only kind of shoe i buy anymore. they are kinda on the expensive side by they are comfortable and dont hurt my feet no matter what im doing.

By running on "turf" I assume you mean grass. If you're going to keep running on that surface, then you really need to get a good set of cleats, or if it is turf, turf shoes. Running on grass/turf in regular shoes is asking for an ankle injury.

For regular running shoes, New Balance makes good comfortable shoes, but I would listen to some of the soccer guys, they run a lot more than most people.

Cardio is a great way to burn calories and drop some weight, but you need to combine it with some weight training. Extra lean muscle mass will do more for fat burning in the long term.

I ran with Asics for a while, they are a good cheap alternative to Nike's.

I now have a set of shocks that I've had for quite some time.

New Balance FTW in that price area. I have them and I work out and run regularly.

As far as dropping weight and getting more lean, a lot of cardio!!! you can do 1000 sit ups and bench presses a day, but if you still have flab over those muscles you're never going to see them. If you do regular cardio routines several times a week, you will lose fat...and combine that with some weight training, you will add muscle while losing the fat. If you better your diet in combination with your cardio and exercise, this is the best way to get results. I don't eat helthy at all, but i do plenty of cardio. If you want the best results, you have to tackle it from all angles. no one thing will get you great results.

Good luck bro..

Yea, I plan on adding in some weight training as well, going to start heading to the gym on Monday, and start getting into a rythem of working out.

Thanks for the advice. Like stated, I will be adding in other routines besides strict cardio to get myself into better condition, but I need to start off a little lighter on myself, since its been quite a while.

And to all of those who gave me advice, THANKS! I appriciate it.

the asics gel kayano is one of the top running shoes out there... if you look around you can get good prices on the older versions (currently on the 13). My dad was a big runner and swore by those shoes (and picked them after a lot of research and trials). Be careful with the shox, ive heard from orthopedists that they are terrible for your ankles over time.

Nike Pegasus

I used that in x country for 3-4 years... imo best shoe for the price. i dont know if they make it anymore, or a version of it, but from what iv seen they have been the best

edit : for a running shoe... make sure to get a true waffle grip on the bottom

+1 for Pegasus. I used to be a hardcore runner in high school, almost ran in college (didn't but that's a whole another story) but I've always loved the Pegasus, and the line up from the Prefontaine collection. Oh yea, make sure you get the right shoe- over pronate, under pronate, etc. you don't want to injure your feet!

I'd recommend just finding a place to play soccer instead of just running. You will run much more in the end by doing this, and it won't feel like torture. Playing a sport is always a better way to get into shape than just running.
