View Full Version : is it legal to drive without a hood?
i got a CF hood that should be in any day now at fuzion, but i did some measuring and there is no way i'm going to be able to fit it in my hatch, i only like like 5 miles from fuzion so i figured i could just pop my oem hood off at home, roll over, and install it infront of the store, would the cops give me any **** for driving without a hood?

Why don't you just install it yourself??
im 99% sure its illegal. why not get someone who has a bigger car to help you out?
i dont know anyone with a big car, my girlfriend has an explorer but its out in north east philly at her parents house ( freshman cant have a car on campus )
Why don't you just install it yourself??
im going to, thats what the whole point is... my hood was shipped to fuzion auto on darby road, i live in drexel hill, i can't get the hood from fuzion to my house so i need to install it at fuzion, but if i install it i wont be able to bring my stock hood back home. so my plan is to leave my stock hood at home, drive to fuzion with no hood, install my new hood, and drive home
edit: to get to fuzion, i literaly just drive up eagle road from my house, then turn on darby road and im there, its like a 5 minute drive, but i ALWAYS see cops either right outside my neighborhood ( drexelbrook ) or up in the deli parking lot on the corner of eagle rd / route 1. i'd say the chance of driving past a cop is 50/50

5 miles? doesnt sound like a very big risk to me. i drove around all day without one and i know others who have too. it is totally illegal, but doesnt sound like you'll be out for very long like that.
would it be a moving violation if i got stopped? if it was a fine that didn't give me points or mess with my insurance i wouldn't care, but i've been trying really hard to fix my driving record and don't want to blow it over a hood

I am not a legal advisor but I would say you would get a fixit ticket and you would have to prove it was fixed within a week or so. Don't take my word for it, call your DMV and ask them.

Call your local police and tell the the situation and see what they say...honestly thats your best bet, they will tell you if it is legal or not and more than likely they will be cool with it if its only 5 mminutes and your reasoning...
You could also just driv therewith your 4-ways on and I don't think they would pull you over...just act dumb if they pull you over and say you are taking it to a shop because your mufflers bearings are bad and your hood won't fit...
yea its definatley illegal in PA, but you might be able to talk your way out of it or you can stick to backroads or something until your there

If its only 5 miles, Fuzion should be able to drop the stock hood back off at your place. Just reason with them. I'm sure they have done that before. Plus, you build a better relationship with them. Maybe, tip the driver a few bucks as well to let him know your considerate of his actions. Just an idea

I believe this is correct. you can drive on sundays without a hood too i believe. theirs a guy around here with no hood on his camaro, he only drives it on sundays. i drove from the Navy base to d-town with no hood on a mustang once. drove past 3 cops, not one did a thing about it. that was on a friday at 3pm. suck is traffic and all.

i believe its a law for hot rods and $hit. most dont have hoods. we have alot of them around. i ask one day about the hood thing and thats what i was told. idk if its true or not, but theres a guy who rips around here every sunday with no hood and tunnel ram sticking up outta the engine bay. he never gets bothered.

thats weird cause one of my intructers is a sargent with the pd and I just asked him about the hood, he said if I did get a ticket all I would have to do is take a picture of my car with the hood on and send it to the courthouse to get it dismiessed. he also said there is no way you can get multiple tickets for the same equipment violation in the same day

Well, they all did get dismissed except 1 just for that reason and plus we were in nj and they were all in diffrent townships,he mos def had to pay 1, just one, ticket. One of my close friends is a cop in Tullytown and another one in falls township. They both said it was not legal. So I don't know what to tell ya. I have a hood on my car.

He didn't ask about that. He asked about a hood. Not tickets! It wasn't me and so there for I don't care. He only had to pay 1. Damn, I think everyone knows you can't get multiple fines for the same thing.

Unless the "law" recently changed in PA, there is no specific "law" against driving without a hood. It is therefore a "grey area". You may be pulled over and ticketed for a safety violation, but you would probaly have the charge revoked if contested.
Getting pulled over for this, however, is very dependant upon area. I had wanted to drive without a decklid(what normally covers engine on a bug, hood is @ prow), but I was informed that the local(L-horn, newtown) heat had become increasingly pressing upon this issue and that it was'nt worth the hassle. Yet the person who built my engine, who formally resided in west chester, was able to drive around decklidless quite frequently and was only pulled over a handful of times and never ticketed; this was despite his car looking like a race car with a big 'ol turbo and huge wing(you'd want one too if you had a 35 year old bug that trapped 143).
BTW, this is my first post on this forum. I've known about it for a short time, but never felt the need to post. I still do'nt NEED to post and I'm not going to do so often. This is to prevent an excessive waste of time on my behalf and yours.:)

saw someone pulled over couple days ago, without a hood, kid in a rsx. with a front mount.
also, saw a kid in a VW without headlights and a front bumper pulled over.
both kids didnt look to happy. i think the cop was impounding the rsx cause he could see the turbo kit, not sure. was near the mall last weekend.

Its a grey area. In my inspection book you are required to fail a car without a hood (if not registered as a "Street rod" I believe). My teacher said he wasn't sure what a cop would do but my guess in havertown is they would pull you over.

No, its not. There is no law that says nitrous is illegal- even in california. If the cop wants to be a dick in CA, he hits you with a "modified smog device" ticket. But the actual uses of Nitrous are not illegal, especially in PA where they REALLY dont care. You could use nitrous on your emissions test, and as long as it didnt throw a code, it would pass.

but he also told me most of them don't care / won't bother to check unless you're being an asshole

Ok, I did. You are correct and I appreciate your time spent in finding the code numbers. Looking under the street rod section, though, a car can have an engine uncovered on the sides as long as the top is covered. This is kind of how my decklid is set up, yet what would they consider a street rod? I also noted that a car must be equipped with bumpers if originally fitted from the factory. However, I drove around for the previous 2 warm seasons without bumpers and have'nt been hassled, even when I was pulled over in Jersey for a different offense.
Whether or no one is pulled over for these issues is dependant on the mood and time management of the percieving officer at the time, as well as hir memory of the rules.

quite frankly, I wouldn't leave the bottle in the car for any inspection / service simply because it's an invitation for whoever is in your car to beat the piss out of it
