Im getting conflicting reports about this, but is it legal to ride a motorbike in PA with just a permit while alone? I know about the dusk til dawn and with passengers is a no no but im getting the report that I have to be accompanied by a licensed rider if i go out by some sources. I also read as long as i have a Class C license I can go out alone with a permit. Which is true?

Looking to pick me up a Suzuki GS here and practice on fair weathered days through the winter and early spring to ride.

As per Title 75 Pa. C.S 1505 (c) you are to be under the instruction and immediate supervision of a licensed motorcycle operator.

Really? I checked with 2 other sources and they both thought there was no buddy system in the state of PA. The one has been riding for a long time too, on a permit.

Well that sucks. Gotta book it to get a license I guess. Thats a stupid permit system that you're punished for not having anyone to ride with...

That's your issue there..."thought". I have what is written into a statute for the commonwealth of PA.

I know people ride around with permits thinking its ok and don't get hassled, but as the law states you need the buddy system with a licensed operator.

PA has such odd laws... Everything is so backwards here. Least Im not forced into those silly emission testing places (yet). If that ever goes state wide, im out of this place. Haha.

Thanks for the info! Looks like I cant ride until the MSP program comes back in the Spring. Now I feel bad, i just picked up my bike and i cant ride it til March. I planned to use it most of the winter.

Woah, wait a tick. In that statute you listed it says:

"(c) Operation of motorcycle.--A motorcycle learner's permit
entitles the person to whom it is issued to operate a motorcycle
only between sunrise and sunset and, except for a driver
licensed to drive another class of vehicle, only while under the
instruction and immediate supervision of a licensed motorcycle
operator. Motorcycle learners shall not carry any passenger
other than an instructor properly licensed"

Doesnt that insinuate that i have to have a supervised M class rider with me UNLESS Im currently holding another class of license? Because it says :
entitles the person to whom it is issued to operate a motorcycle
only between sunrise and sunset and, except for a driver
licensed to drive another class of vehicle, only while under the
instruction and immediate supervision of a licensed motorcycle
operator.

This would appear to mean (to me at least) that I need instruction and supervision of a licensed motorcycle operator EXCEPT If i hold another class of PA license. Which i do of course, Class C.

I just verified again from 2 others after reading your re-post and you are correct. As long as you hold another class of license you are good to go. Thanks for being persistent, and I'll definitely admit when i'm incorrect.

So ride away and have fun and be safe :)
