View Full Version : Question about Inspection / Vehicle History Report / Mileage Reported

I just picked up a Civic hatch and the mileage reported when the previous owner bought the on 1/15/11 was 140,000, which is the actual mileage of the car.
Unfortunately he then swapped a different gauge cluster (from an EX model so it has a tachometer) and had it inspected on 2/15/11 where the mileage on the cluster read 176,000.
(This cluster is currently in the car but I planned to go back to the original to not have any mileage discrepancy issues).

I didn't realize the mileage written on the back of the sticker until today as I was driving to work, and I had already bought the car.

Do the garages report mileage and does that go on the car's recored? It isn't showing up in an "Autocheck" report (through eBay). I'm pretty sure that they do and the 176,000 number is now locked in to the vehicle's history even though it didn't show up on this Autocheck.

I'd much prefer to report the mileage as 141,000 which is the real mileage but I don't want to have that create a mileage error if the 176,000 number is on record from the inspection listed above.

Any ideas? Thanks...

If the cluster was swapped properly there should be a sticker in the door from what I understand. It could just be a simple mistake from the shop that did the inspection because it is easy to overlook if they aren't told about it.

If they have a record of the new mileage and they put it on ur registration that that is going to be the mileage on the. Car so when you are going to sell it it you have to say it's ..... This many miles.

Mileage is only reported when you register or re-register a car. If your that concerned scrape the old stickers off before you go to get it reinspected. Tracking a vehicle mileage by an inspection sticker is impossible. What if you bought the car from Florida, there is no inspection or emissions there period. Therefore showing mileage is only tracked by registration.

i know if you put mileage thats less than it was before into the emissions machine it sends a promt to double check the mileage is correct, but i never heard of any problems. and you have to remember, when you register a vehicle the state is relying on people who dont know or just dont care to give the correct mileage. so im sure theres a lot of discrepencies. i wouldnt worry about it. i dont think the state police are gonna come knocking down your door for 30K on a civic.

If the shop knew what they were doing they should have either not inspected the car, or slapped it with unknown mileage. But that never happens because most techs are fat, lazy, slobs.

Personally I would not worry about it. If its really bugging you, you could slap the original cluster in it and go back to the shop saying they fat fingered it and want a replacement set of stickers.

i would just drive 36k mile on the 140k one and then you can swap back over. if your looking to sell I would try to call up the dmv see if they have it listed.

Honduh, WTF are you talking about? If a customer brings a car into the shop for inspection and the NEW mileage reads higher than the old mileage thats legal. You just can't reverse the mileage. Im 100% sure that there is nothing in the inspection manual that states you need to make sure the cluster in the vehicle is the serial number matching one for the car.
