View Full Version : 1997 CR-V or 2000 Cherokee?

Both:
160,000 miles
automatic
looks like in very good condition

Cherokee:
6 cylinder 4.0 Liter
$3500

CR-V:
2.0 Liters 4 banger
$3900

I need a secondary car to get around in Philly and for the winter. I have a set of Blizzaks for my Evo with only 3,000 miles on them, so when I sell them I can probably get $500 to put towards either one of these cars.

Which do you think is better? I naturally think the Honda is more reliable, but I talked to some people and posted on the cherokee forum and they said that the Jeep motors last long and problems are generally few and far. Gas mileage isn't an issue as long as it does better than 14mpg.

lol the 4.0 in the jeep is a dog. I hate that motor. 14mpg is about what you should expect.

Id go for the CR-V. I wanna do a B18B swap in a CRV (basically direct replacement anyway), and boost it.

It runs on 87 right?

Yes, they both run on 87.

i say go for jeep just because if you ever want to go offroad the jeep will do it stock.

I test drove that generation of CR-V and it is a DOG. Severely underpowered.

Maybe you could fine a 2nd Gen CR-V. We went with one of those instead. Reliability as been typical for a Honda and it works well in inclement weather.

I say the jeep, my dad has had his 4.0 since 20,000 miles now it's got 185,000 and still runs like a new.

This is what I figured. It probably has absolutely no pick up at all lol.

CR-v,you can use a b20 turbo kit if you want to down the line, also they make coils for it and stuff.

i vote jeep. my ex had a 4.0l and it was beastly. she overheated twice on a blown head gasket and the new owner put one on and it ran just fine.

if MPG werent a concern of mine i'd be getting a jeep

No mods for this car. This is going to be a point A to point B car that I don't have to worry about being stolen or curbing wheels that cost more than these cars while parking in the city.

I love the Evo, and it's fun to drive around in, but sometimes I'd rather just drive something normal. My Evo stalls going from a stop with the AC on because of my cams. The drone gets annoying on long trips. And I am always worried about someone stepping on my sideskirts, or curbing my Volks.

Yeah, I think I'm going to get the Jeep. I'm going to go look at it in person on Monday. Hopefully it won't sell for another 2 weeks so I can get the $3500 or so together.

I'd be far too tempted to perform crazy offroad shenaniganary with a Jeep. I'm sure the Honda gets better gas mileage.

That is the least year they made a cherokee that didn't have electrical issues till around '05.

Problem I have with the 4.0 is around 150K the oil pumps take a **** and since it's a inline motor, usually the rods bearing start taking a **** from the back. So when buying try holding the revs up around 3 grand and listen for any knocking. Also be sure to make sure it has solid oil pressure. They also are common for oil leaks. Not a big deal. They all do it and keeps things from rusting :) Other then that I don't normally see problems with these. The XJ is a great offroad truck and can be made a decent offroader for fairly cheap.

The CRV...I hate them. Underpowered and a complete bore to drive. It's a teenage girls car. Ya might as well buy a tracker.

get the jeep. 2001 is the final year for the xj btw. 4.0 is bulletproof no matter what anyone tells you. something might break here or there, but it will NEVER die. just hit it with a hammer and keep driving. 200k plus for sure. im going to pick one up too for the winter, i miss my XJ more than any car ive ever owned.

i'd go with the jeep as well. That link you posted says theres a noise coming from the rear. I'd find out what the noise is. could be suspension knocking, or a diff. whine.

We got a 5spd first gen CRV last year for my husband to drive in the winter and he hated it. Not only was the thing super slow in general, but he really hated the way it drove in the snow. I don't think he liked the realtime 4WD on the CRV. (My element has realtime 4WD and that thing hauls ass in the snow; we love it.) I never drove the CRV in the snow so I can't tell you first hand, but he just hated it. He got rid of it as soon as he could.

Well, I think from what I'm hearing here I'll go for a Cherokee.

I put two sets of lightly used spare tires up for sale last night, so if those sell I'll have $3000. Yokohama Advan A13's and Bridgestone Blizzak WS60's (both 245/40/18 with 3000 miles or less on them). The Advans are $1400 new and the Blizzaks are $680 new.

Get a Durango.

The only complant i got on mine is the ****ty gas mileage. Other then that, it tows, and is a beast in the snow.

get a jeep, i'd shop around for a better price but if you want a winter ride the jeep is an excellent choice. mine had 260K and ran well, drove okay, and for passengers was a very comfortable ride.

thats what she said

sorry, had to. but, the durango is a "big" medium size SUV. I like it though. Little more room in it then a Jeep, but, not huge like the suburan and expeditions.

My mom bought a brand new 2000 Cherokee in 99, and gave it to me for 1k in 2007 with 88k. Learned to drive in it, parallel park, kiss, etc... Hands down my favorite car in the world. Gas mileage sucks though!!! and so does driving it in the rain (and the brakes). Now my mom has the same style CRV and its garbage... Way to touchy, and has the most uncomfortable seats I have ever sat in. Beat the **** out of my Jeep for 5 years, and it always ran like a champ.. Only problem I ever had was the passenger window switch.

Woo! Off-roading!!

There's a 2000 Land Rover Discovery SE-7 Series II for sale going for $4,800.

4.0L V8, 126,000 miles, Java black exterior. Looks mint. What do you guys think? I can get the funds if I wait a few more weeks.

http://southjersey.craigslist.org/ctd/1921151360.html

There are a few more within the same price range (more or less). How are these cars versus the Cherokee? Obviously they have a lot more luxury, but reliability?

i remeber one of my buddy's mom had one. The thing was unreliable, and had no power for a v-8.

honestly ive never had a problem in the crv in the snow it actually felt pretty good but it definitely was under powered especially trying to get up a hill you can just hear the b20 motor struggling my sister in law has one and i think its just terrible but gas is great. ive driven a jeep in the snow also and was fun as hell!! but the gas mileage killed me.

My suggestion is get a nissan pathfinder by far one of the best cars EVER in my opinion to drive in the snow of course youd have to have snow tires on it but without it its still great. ive driven in about maybe a couple feet of snow in one and got stuck for a second but going back and forth helped and got out within a couple of seconds. just my .02 lol

discos are slow as balls and not nearly as reliable as a jeep. still cool trucks.

Hmmm. But they're so nice compared to the Jeep.

Remember, I'm concerned about reliability and performance in the snow. Also kind of image.

I'm not concerned about fuel economy or power. Unless the power is so slow that I'll die merging (like the CR-V).

Cherokee. I got 17mpg in mine with a 3.5" lift on 31" M/Ts. Even stock they're great in the winter. Only problems I ever had in mine was leaky pinion seal in the front ($75 fix) and the electric fan burnt out ($50 and DIY).

My buddy tried killing one during the cash for clunkers and it ran for 20 mins without any oil and the sodium silicate inside. That should tell you how tough the 4.0 is.

a friend of mine did that at his shop and the thing ran for about 20 minutes with no oil in the thing, then it blew up and continued to run on 5 cyclinders for about another 10 minutes before it finally died. i love these engines.

i have a 96 cherokee at home with the 4.0 with 4x4 and its sitting right now with about 150k on the clock with the motor and trans origanal. ive fixed the leakly pinion seal on the rear once and the front one is still good to go. this is common on these. this thing rocks in the snow. with just goodyear wrangler rt/s tires on it i had no problems romping through the blizzards we had this past winter. id def get the jeep. for the price you cant go wrong.

im not sure what the hp/tq numbers are but mine has no problem getting up and going. its very torquey

lol. I think any car with 150,000+ miles will have some sort of problem down the road, but after doing some research here and on the Cherokee forum it seems like the Jeep I6 4.0L is a great motor, and the cars are very simple so not much can break like the Land Rover. Cheap to fix too. I'm already looking at mods though, so hopefully this doesn't become another money pit. It'd be a shame if this thing gets lifted with 33" tires, fender flares, bumper add ons... hmm

There I fixed for ya. As everyone else says I would go with the jeep, those things are almost un-killable.

Also who ever said that trackers are boring girl cars, I had a 91 tracker and it was the most fun little beater I have ever owned, It fits just about anywhere off road and is also very hard to kill, after floating threw a mud pit(yes i said floated) and being rolled it is still going, would not hesitate to buy another one.
