metric system

do you prefer the metric system over standard? i think measuring stuff its easier using 10's compared to fractions. i think it would be alittle hard getting used to judging speed and temperture though.

just a random thought and curious what everyone else thinks. i think its easier especially using tools, and adding and subtracting fractions is a pain in the ass. i dont know why we are the only country to use it.

I like metric tools, but when a mail order bride says shes this tall in centimeters and weighs this many kilograms I get confused.

it would take a lot more to get used to the metric system than it does standard. but thats because its what we all learned i guess. its like anything else, the more you use it the easier it gets. use fractions every day and theyre cake too.

i would prefer if we switched to the metric system. even though i know its easy, i still get confused with what is what b/c i don't use it every day.

i think you give every US citizen a week of being forced to use it in every day life we could make the switch without an issue. i did just fine w/ it in school, but i haven't touched the stuff in a while (a little bit in astronomy)

I use the metric system for just about everything. Only thing I don't use it for is when I measure the weight of something. Most of the world actually uses the metric system. America and a few others only use the standard system.

I use both all the time, and convert between the two just as often. With that said, metric is so much simpler. Stubborn americans....

I am used to the metric system first, and when I got into machining more and more, standard has taken some thought. Some people can picture a "few thousandths" - I can picture .1 mm or so haha.

usa, burma and liberia is the only countries who use standard. i just want to be able to use meters and centimeters at work when doing construction.

* Cargo errors

The confusion between pounds (mass) and kilograms sometimes means that aircraft are overloaded. "the shipper's weights had been in kilograms, not pounds, and that, as a result, the aircraft was more than 30,000 pounds overweight".[15]

* Gimli Glider

In 1983 a Boeing 767 jet ran out of fuel in mid-flight because of two mistakes in figuring the fuel supply of Air Canada's first aircraft to use metric measurements. [16]

* Mars Climate Orbiter

In 1999 NASA lost a $125 million Mars orbiter because one engineering team used metric units while another used US customary units for a calculation. [17]

* Medical errors

Medical errors in the US are sometimes attributed to the confusion between grains and grams. A patient received phenobarbital 0.5 grams instead of 0.5 grains (0.03 grams) after the prescriber misread the prescription.[18]

I wish we would switch. I don't get our system, like seriously who thought that fractions of an inch, then 12 inches then 3 ft then 1760 yards? the ****? working in powers of 10s is the easiest thing ever.

I could go either way on this question, but I honestly don't care lol.... I use metric tools on my car(s) but standard stuff to measure to cook. They both have their +'s and -'s
