You tell me what's fair

So, I picked up a partial sponsor for body work. The guy was a very nice dude, with plenty experience. His son was also a nice guy as well so I felt I was in good hands. We made an agreement for less than half of the value of the job. In exchange I would design a logo for him and display it on my car at whatever events I attended.

I dropped off the car with three weeks to go for the East Coast Bash. He promised me he would finish in two weeks to give me at least a week to have the rest of the car assembled (cage, motor work, alignment etc.)

7 weeks and several unreturned calls and emails later I was given this beauty.

Before (I wanted it to look like this again)

Disassembled upon drop-off. Skirts and spare Vertex bumper inside car.

Truck bed liner applied to bumpers without my consent

Brand new leather. Thank God I took the interior out before I dropped it off

Prep job

Half painted mirror

Unmasked trim

Sanded trim

Dents

This bumper fit before

This whole side was never touched by a buffer. Dents galore.

Bumper no where near lines up

Exhaust, primed and painted

I was called from the paint store to confirm the color I wanted. This was supposedly mixed last week.

This clearly says 2006.

My Aero is untouched, just drips and overspray

And the kicker, this happened to my SC last week.

So I sent him a letter:

After seven weeks I have lost time and money that I can never recover. I have also lost a sponsor and missed 3 events. When I picked up the car I did not see it in the sunlight missing the glaring flaws in the job. It is clear this was not sprayed in a booth or proper facility. The damage includes but is not limited to:

Orange peel everywhere, Steve promised me there wouldn’t be any peel at all.
Dents. Some were fixed, but there are dents there that I have never seen before.
Panels that were clearly untouched by the buffer
Hood does not line up
Bumpers do not line up
Trunk does not line up
Fenders do not line up
Rear bumper is broken and improperly mounted with missing hardware
Interior was not protected from dust and primer. My brand new leather seat has primer stain on it.
My engine bay was not masked adequately It is filthy with dust primer and overspray.
The eyelids on my headlights were not painted as requested, but have speckles of primer on them
My mirrors were not painted completely.
There is primer on my tires.
Bumpers were rubber coated without my consent.
After all the extra time my roof spoiler, trunk spoiler, spare bumper and side skirts still have not been repaired or painted.
Drivers side indicator was not plugged in and as a result was dragged on the ground on the ride home and damaged.
Trim was not properly masked and as a result was either sanded or over sprayed with primer.

Upon the receipt of the rest of my items (roof spoiler, trunk spoiler, sideskirts andspare bumper) I realized they had not been worked on at all. There was over sprayed primer all over them, and the bumper I had requested to be repaired had not been touched. The can of paint that was given to me as leftovers said it was mixed on 7/7/2006, when I was told it was being mixed and purchased last week (6/19/2009).

I was unaware that you had a second job at the time we made our agreement, and I did not find out until weeks into the job well past the two week deadline. In light of the damage and the time taken (5 weeks overdue) I request that the $500 I have already paid be refunded. I also request that you cover the cost for a shop of my choice to repair the damage done and complete the job correctly.

His response:

So let me know what you want to do.

thanks

Hi I 'm interested I will give you a 2500.00 paint job for 1000.00 and hope to pick up some work from being a sponsor.

XXXX
If you can honestly say the job you gave me is worth $2500 then I will leave it at that.

My request is not unreasonable. You can see the photos in your email.

ob. good thing you have the agreement in writing. i am fairly certain that this would be considered a legal contract as long as both parties agreed. therefore, him saying that you owe him additional money is nowhere near correct. the agreement is for a set cost, so he cannot suddenly decide to charge you for full price.

you might be screwed, if you didnt have anything in writing as far as contracts for work and terms of sponsorship. i would definitely try to re-coop as much of your money as possible...that work is unacceptable regardless of discount for sponsorship. If he makes you eat it i would release his name to the forum masses as to the quality of his work. Are you going to talk to a lawyer? or not worth your time? I hope this isnt a TST member or vendor. good luck

edit: what happened to the SC?
