'69 Chevy pickup project.. parts truck, page 8

I figure with all the fuss and enthusiasm I've been showing the pat few days I should put up a member's journal with some pics...

these pics are only of what I received when looking at the truck.

But first, a short story...

The truck is officially mine, yet not in my hands. After dealing with the tag place, and getting the headlights and grill back on... charging the battery and firing her right up. It was dark... first thing I noticed, no rear lights

Seems like a fuse blew, and with the mess of wiring in the back I'm not surprised. I will be picking up the truck this weekend as long as the ground is dry regardless of whether or not the lights work.

First part of this project is getting those lights working, second is probably going to be me rewiring the entire truck and replacing the old fuse box with a newer one. new wires + new fuse box = a lot less problems with an old vehicle.

So... with out further ado, my brand spanking new '69 Chevy C10 stepside. 350cid from a 71 camaro, mated to a 2 speed powerglide, w/ 4.11's in the ass end. Lowered and sitting on corvette rally rims front and back, 15 x 10 in the rear 15 x 8 up front. No mufflers, no cats...

You suck. No you don't. I am just jealous. I had a '70 CST and a '72 Custom. I miss both of those trucks. If you need some help/advice, let me know. LMC truck parts is your new best friend.

**Edit** I still have a new blower motor for the heater....It's yours if you need it.

This is my first real project.

I'm good with electrical stuff... engine work not so much.

There is a slight tapping from the right side, guy said the lifters are a little tight on one of the cylinders. Going to need to convert to disc brakes... from manual drums....

No a/c, no heater, no power brakes. I think it has power steering... lol hell, I've only got two gears ;)

What engine is it?? Please dont say it is a 307. Nevermind, I just read that it is a 350. Convert the hubs to '71-'72 5 lug with factory disc. They work well. The rear axle shafts will have to get replaced, but that is a simple job. If it is a coil spring/trailing arm rear suspension, make sure the trailing arms are in good shape, and box them if you plan on making serious power. They will break, ask me how I know.

yeah, 350 from a 71 camaro. Not sure where the powerglide came from... possibly the same car.

anyway, thinking of picking this up w/ my next paycheck and some some new headlights and tail lights

looks a lot nicer than dealing with a EFI car.

I'd much prefer to get rid of those old glass fuses and get the plastic fuses in. I've never done electrical on a vehicle (only houses). At least with a classic truck it shouldn't be that hard.

Sadly I don't have a garage available to me... so its off to bug the parents to borrow theres.

This, the truck in general, is a big project for me. I'd like to do as much as possible on my own, or with help. So I'll def be in contact

I would scrap the re-wire project unless the wiring harness is completely boogered. Most of the wiring issues come from bad ground contacts. So, if the new harness is 'plug and play'...great, but the harness in the link needs to be cut to fit.

hmm yeah... it seems like a grounding issue...

the rear lights turned on.. then off shortly after. AND when we were messing around w/ the ground we blew the fuse on the interior lights...

The rear LED lights are spliced to hell... the wiring is horrible... the first thing I'm gonna do is is order up some classic round rear lights and mount them on the wheel wells and clean up the wiring(obviously)

that is a possibility... sadly, I'm really tempted to tell the guy I bought it from to screw himself and bring it home w/o the rear lights working and fix it myself... its gotta be a bad ground.

I'll give him an hour or so this weekend, if they're not working I'm driving it home w/ the ex g/f behind me.

If the truck was a lighter color I'd drive it out and tell any cops "sir... I just bought this and the damn lights were working when I got in... must've blew a fuse on the way over..."

I'm out my money and the truck isn't sitting in my parking lot...

Just go get it. Get wiring! Just make sure you dont use crimp connectors....solder everything!

yeah, the asshole who did the previous wiring has ****ing wire nuts...

I can get a cheap soldering iron from a craft store and the solder itself and redo that ****... probably work just fine after that too... gotta get a wire brush too to clean off the surface rust on the frame so I can ground it nicely.

Get a butane torch. Solder irons suck!!!! Heat shrink it and done.

you've done brake work before? I could def use help once I get everything I need to convert to power disc brakes. Of course... I've gotta buy some damn rims for the 5 lug conversion... 6 lug ftl...

installing the supercharger should be fun though

Im with poolmike. Pick up a 50watt soldering iron and a small butane torch. The torch will deff be easier and capable of doing larger gauge wires, but theres some areas that i would simply not torch. Also, the heat shrink tubing is called just that, heat shrink tubing. Any hardware store should have it in various sizes and radio shack even has it in various colors so you can make it almost the same color as the wire.
