New to auto X

Hey guys, I'm thinking that I'd like to give auto cross a try come spring and I was just wondering where I could find a list of events for the eastern pa area and if anyone had any tips/advice. The car I'll be using is a 05 cts-v.

Bring a DOT approved helmet, $40(for non-scca members), and your car. In the NEPA region our normal format for the day is 2 morning heats(~3 runs per heat) and 2 afternoon heats(~4 runs per heat). You run one morning and one afternoon heat, do course work(not hard) for one, and you are off for the last heat.

Helmets have to have a current snell rating. DOT is not enough in the NEPA region. ;)

if you have an idea what class your car falls in, it's helpful as well to those running registration. current SCCA rulebook can be found on NEPA's website.

An "M" or just "DOT" helmet is not sufficient. It must say at least S2005/SA2005 or later. Sometimes the rating is under the padding.

Helmets are good for 10 years from their rating for SCCA autox. Other autox organizations follow form. Many regions have loaner helmets you can borrow. Just get a headsock if you're worried about cooties.

Track day events usually require helmets with SA ratings, so take that into consideration if buying.

I think your CTS-V will be much better suited for a road couse.

Def get the correct helmet, some good tires, and good brakes though.

There's a small handful of guys that run big sedans locally. They unfortunately get classed with cars better suited for autox. That doesn't mean you won't have a great time and learn a lot about your car in the process.

I'm currently running 255 continental dw's, drilled and vented rotors and ebc red stuff pads so tires and brakes shouldn't be a issue

You should come to a CPR event. I've been running as many as I can. Next year I may finally have enough rubber under the car to be competitive at CPI. It's just a little tight. Mid-state airport is also a blast, but it was chilly and it took me all day to figure out the proper tire pressures with the new sway bars.

Fun fact: I've never run at Mid-state without spinning at least once.

I'm sure I'll have traction issues then, even with my continental extreme contact DW's I can't get the car to hook up unless it's like 85* or hotter

You'll always have grip/traction issues with your car. 255s aren't very wide for that heavy of a car. I currently run 245 Star Specs and I will spin the front inside wheel on corner exit.

If you stick with autox, you'll want better tires. If staying with a street tire, look into the Dunlop Star Spec or Yokohama AD08. RE-11s don't perform well on bigger cars.

Or you could always get a set of Hoosier A6s.

i will say that the mid-state airport events are alot of fun. you'll see higher speeds than you will at a NEPA event due to our lack of BIG lots to run.

An M Rated Helmet of M2005+ is okay for SCCA Solo2. Your can find them fairly cheap.

Take it and run it stock first. Just like you have it. You can't fix anything until you know what's wrong. Usually it's a driver issue more than a car issue.
