Car Of The Month: July '06 - GregFedder

Car Of The Month: July '06
GregFedder's 2002 Subaru WRX

TST: So how did you hear about TriStateTuners?
GF: That’s a good question. I guess Dimitri [subwrxkid] told me about it. I met him at a meet a while back I think.

TST: What are your main automotive interests (show, drag, road racing, etc.)?
GF: Drag, and I like time attack… and I guess show a little bit.

TST: Are you focusing on anything particular right now?
GF: Yeah the Time Attack event August 5 and 6 at Summit Point Raceway. It’s called RedLine Time Attack. (www.timeattack.com). Its sponsored by Modified Magazine.

TST: How does a time attack work exactly?
GF: We get three 20 minute sessions where you get to practice the course. On the last 20 minute session you get a practice lap and then 4 hot laps and you go for the best time you can in one single lap. I’ll probably be competing in street class which requires things like a front dash, door panels and treadwear minimum rating of 140.

TST: How do you expect to do?
GF: Very well hopefully. I’ve had 3 years experience in open track events and 2 years of indoor go kart racing, so I expect to do well. Although I’m brand new to time attack events, I expect to have one of the best setups in street class.

TST: What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received about your car? Worst insult?
GF: Wow that’s tough, I guess the worst thing is when I was asked if my car was one of those supercharged WRKs. The best would be…I guess people come up to you and say “I bet you get laid a lot from that thing” even though it’s the complete opposite cause I haven’t gotten **** from that car.

TST: The car hasn’t gotten you any girls, you think it’s actually done the opposite?
GF: If anything it’s gotten in the way of past relationships, just because of the time and money involved.

TST: Haha, are you ok with that?
GF: 100% I’ll always pick the car over the girl.

TST: Any good kill stories to share with us?
GF: Yeah, let me think… My only really good kill story is when I got killed… I raced a 650 whp 911 Turbo and he left me standing still. I ran into him on the street and he told me good luck… I laughed. He let me get 2-3 cars ahead and next thing I knew he put 10 cars on me by 120 mph. At the track I guess would be a Z06 at Pocono when I was able to catch him in the infield and pass him, leaving him in the runoff gravel because he tried to brake so late to stay in front of me.

TST: What’s your favorite mod?
GF: I’d have to say, I guess the external wastegate. It scares people around campus.

TST: Any future mod plans?
GF: To be honest, I don’t really know. If anything a Perrin GT30R kit and an Andrewtech gearbox. A new front lip and a paintjob would be the only other thing I would do.

TST: What cars did you own before this?
GF: A 2001 Legacy GT Limited, a 2004 WRX, and a 2003 350Z track edition. I own the WRX now because I love AWD and that you can use the power in all weather. Parts are relatively cheap compared to other manufacturers.

TST: Where do you see yourself with regards to involvement in cars in 5 years, and what will you be driving?
GF: Hopefully I’ll own a Lotus Exige with a K20 swap as a track car with a gray Evo 9 MR as a daily driver. I’d like to get involved in some kind of spec racing league. I want to get into having a dedicated racecar instead of trying to have my daily driver pull a dual duty.

TST: What other hobbies/interests do you have? What else do you do with your time?
GF: Just music, the band... (ww.myspace.com/makingapril) That’s about it, surfing TST, going to the bars on the weekends.

TST: Here’s your opportunity to send some shoutouts…
GF: Thank you to Andy at Xotic Motorsports (www.xoticmotorsports.com), WorldOne Performance (www.worldoneperformance.com), my family, and the local DD tuners… I think that includes everyone.

[crumbling sound over the phone]
GF: I just found a massive bag of popcorn. You should put that in the interview.
TST: You got it, Greg.

But I am sure the exhaust is angled for back pressure to have a faster spool-up for larger size turbochargers @ low RPM
