Car Of The Month: March '07 - PhillyLS1

Car Of The Month: March '07
PhillyLS1s 2000 Chevy Camaro SS

TST: So lets just get down to business… 600 rwhp without nitrous… not bad at all. What boost was that at?
Keith: 600hp @ 5600 RPM with 10 PSI… For right now this is the real tune. It's a street tune. If you're talking about putting it on "kill mode" then some things are going to have to change with the cam because what's in the car now is not efficient for the cubes. The cam should be in a 346 cube car, not a 408.

TST: I assume that this spring/summer you'll be heading to the track to see what you can get out of it?
Keith: Yeah. It's going to be a track tour because there's no cage in the car and that means I'm going to get kicked out a lot.

TST: ha, not planning to put a cage in? Might as well so you can really get some track time in…
Keith: Well if I'm going to put the cage in I'm going to do it right. And a 10 point cage to run a 9 second 1/4 is around $3,000 for a chrome molly with installation… so that's next season.

TST: yeah, tell me the story of how the car went from where it was to where it is...
Keith: When I got promoted to E-4 I decided to buy a 4th gen. I always wanted one. I had an LT4 Firehawk and a LB9 Firebird that was a WS6. I got an LS1 and it got wrecked. I bought the SS by chance in 2004. I did the bolt-ons and ran it to a best of 12.40's on street tires. Then, I got the news I had to be deployed…

I worked with F-Body Central from overseas and my girlfriend told them what I wanted done. There was literally a time where I was on a roof top in Husaybah , Iraq using a satellite phone to tell Jason (from F-Body Central) what I wanted.....

I got back from Iraq with a wicked set of heads that GTP did specifically for me because I was deployed. Well I put a giant cam in there and one day while messing around I missed a shift and dropped a valve. I never got to enjoy the car because I dropped a valve right after I got home....

In the time I got back Jason had seen me drive, and after the motor went he decided to sponsor me for the rebuild. My girlfriend helped me put the car together and since I was sponsored I got to use the shop, so I sat down with Jason and we banged out my set-up.

I got lucky and found a guy who was parting his car out for next to nothing, and got the best STS turbo kit you can get from him, and I spent all winter putting the car back together. As for the nitrous.... well, that's there because I got addicted to it before the boost. So why not have the best of both worlds?

TST: So you said your goal is a 9 second street car without going to an auto tranny, is that something you hope to accomplish this year, or what is your goal for this summer?
Keith: realistically the transmission probably won't hold up if I went for the 9 seconds this season, so my goal for this season is to get a 10.50 leaving off of idle. That also means I'll have a limited amount of runs cause of the 11.50 rule
I mean literally my goal is just to have fun this year and enjoy my hard work
I'm not trying to break any records or set the world on fire. I just want a nasty street car until next season when I can really go all out.

TST: Nice… sounds like things have come a long way. How did you hear about TST?
Keith: LS1tech, in their Mid-Atlantic section. It was a link to a meet at The Dump in November or December.

TST: Oh ok cool, well we're glad to have you... we've tried to welcome domestic owners as much as possible but unfortunately there aren't nearly as many of them around as import owners

Keith: the domestic guys on TST do more PMing than you think.
TST: Oh, something I wanted to ask…are you purely a drag racer, or are you interested in other forms of motor sports too?
Chris:: no I'm into everything except drifting. I'll have an Auto-X mode as soon as I can get everything I need suspension wise. Either that or I'll use my SRT-4 for Auto-X… but FWD FTL.

TST: Ha nice... so when can we plan on seeing you out at the drag strip? You must be anxious to get a few runs under your belt
Keith: As soon as I can get time tidy things up. Should be by the end of the month.

TST: And is the SRT-4 getting neglected these days or are you still able to enjoy it?
Keith: No I split the week up. I love the SRT-4 but it's under warranty, and that limits what I can do. But it keeps me focused on one thing at a time. I knew the car was a keeper when it set the stock SRT-4 record for a completely stock SRT-4… 13.63 @ 101.

TST: Not bad at all… Well I wont keep you much longer... any shout outs or anything worth saying that I didn't ask about?
Keith: Just thanks to my family, Natalie my girlfriend who literally help me build the car, Jason, Tuan, John, Evan, James, Joe Goss, Jenn at F-Body Central, Bret Shook's Tuning at F-Body Central, and everyone who encouraged me and offered advice.

TST: cool, its definitely a unique setup so way to go for it at full speed and I wish you the best... here's to 10s this year and 9s the next...

Keith: thanks man, thanks for the opportunity
TST: hey, you earned it… glad to have this kind of diversity on the forum
