Car Of The Month: May '07 - 95nracer

Car Of The Month: May '07
95nracer's 88 Mazda RX-7 TII

TST: So When did you pick up this sweet RX-7?
Jerry: I bought it Feb 2001, 3 days before my daughter was born.

TST: How did you find it?
Jerry: I was stationed in New Mexico at the time and bought the car from a Singaporean who was headed back home and needed to sell the car quick. It was completely stock and in good condition.

TST: What drew you to the car, and did you know anything about RX-7s at the time?
Jerry: When I was in Japan I had an Integra but I wrecked it. I needed something quick and I came across an FC, so I picked it up… I had the basic mods on that one: intake, exhaust, and wheels.
I came back to the U.S. and bought a non-turbo FC, and waited till I could find a good condition turbo model, and that’s when I found the one I have now..

TST: And did you have big plans for it from the start or have things just moved along over time?
Jerry: It was a small progression here and there, and it keeps accumulating.

TST: So I don’t know a lot about RX-7s, but I hear that the engines need to be rebuilt pretty often, are you on the original motor or something else?
Jerry: This is my 2nd motor on this car because the first one had a wastegate line blow off when I was boosting in 5th gear. I replaced it with another complete motor with stock ports.

TST: Give me a quick rundown of the highlights of the mods.
Jerry: It’s got a BNR turbo, which is basically a T04b wheel in a milled stock compressor housing with a clipped turbine. Just trying to keep it as reliable as possible. I also have a GReddy FMIC, primary and secondary GReddy 720cc injectors, Rtek v2.0 engine management.

TST: And I saw you had some weight reduction done…
Jerry: Yeah it helps to make the car a little quicker, a lot of the stuff are things I really didn’t need, like the power steering which didn’t really fit with the FMIC piping, the Air Conditioning didn’t work so I pulled that out, and just some other minor things here and there. I didn’t go too extreme, still have the full interior, etc.

TST: And you just got it painted, its looking really nice now…
Jerry: Yeah that was the biggest recent project, taking 2 days to prep it and finally get it painted all one color.

TST: What else is in the works?
I’d like to upgrade my secondary injectors to 1000cc injectors, and go to a full T04e turbo with a tubular manifold and external wastegate. I’d like to see if I can control the bigger injectors with the Rtek v2.0, hopefully it can.

TST: And what was your best time at the track to date?
Jerry: It’s a 12.7 at 111 with a 1.8 60’

TST: Do you think there’s any room left to shave off some time, I know you’ve been trying…
Jerry: There might be a little more power in there but for the most part the turbo is out of breath now, but maybe I can get a 12.6 out of it.

TST: And after the new mods you mentioned above, do you care to take a guess on where you will be then?
Jerry: Hopefully I can get my traps up to 117-119, maybe close to 350 whp compared to the 297 whp and 252 wtq I’m making now.

TST: What do you see happening with the car in the future?
Jerry: I’d just like to keep it more or less as is and maintain the condition that it is in now. I would love to pass this car on to my daughter so that she can drive it around later on in her life.

TST: And of course she’s a big fan of your car?
Jerry: Oh yeah, I think she’s my number one fan.

TST: Have you told her it might be hers one day?
Jerry: Nope not yet, haha.

TST: We’ve been talking about drag racing, but do you have any desire to get into road racing or auto-x?
Jerry: I would love to get out to an auto-x, but I’ve just never been. Hopefully when Jon gets back I’ll finally get out there. Or maybe when TST has another day where a bunch of guys get out there.

TST: So I think out of every interview I’ve done, everyone has ultimate plans to move onto a different care, move onward and upward, but you haven’t mentioned anything other thank keeping the RX-7, what is it about this car?
Jerry: I guess I like being different… whenever I go to the meets I see the same kind of cars, and its just not unique. I like that everyone’s always coming up to me asking about mine because its just not as common. I just love the car…

TST: Any ‘thank you’s…?
Jerry: Just want to thank my family for helping me with my car and supporting me with it, and the forums like teamfc3s.org and rx7club.com for the tons of help that I have gotten. TriStateTuners has also been great for supporting the local scene and giving us all a way to organize and meet up with each other.
I’ve got to say that TST is the best forum around because of what it provides for us. I like that so many different people come together and can share so much knowledge with each other, like Fred (WKDerf) with all of his audio knowledge, and Bill (wgknestrick) who is always being so innovative like the ITBs he is working on right now for his STi. I like that… just lots of different info and different ways of doing things. That’s just naming a few…

TST: Thanks Jerry, you’re a huge part of the community you’re talking about right now, glad to have you and your car around and proud to have you as a member of TriStateTuners.
