The Champagne of Electronic Repair Shops
I bought DSMLink secondhand, so I didn't get the socketing service for my ECU from DSMLink themselves. "No big deal" I said confidently to myself, "There's a shop on scotch road with 'electronic service' in the name. . .they can't possibly have a problem with unsoldering a chip and installing a socket". In retrospect, I should never assume anything. . .ever again. So I take a trip to radio shack today to see if they have the socket I need. . .naturally they don't. "No big deal" I once again tell myself, "I'll still take it to Electronic Service Lab, as previously stated in my inner monologue, they have 'electronic service' in the name! If they don't have the socket on hand, I'm sure they have a book they can order one out of. . .an order book of sorts". Again, the 'don't assume anything' rule should have been followed. I walked in their store where the guy behind the counter was just finishing up referring a possible customer to another repair shop for whatever the hell it was that needed repairing. Looks like it's my turn at the plate. I place my ECU on the counter and explain that I just need a socket installed. He then tells me that it's "a factory part" and I should "talk to mitsubishi" to get it socketed. I then calmly explained to him that I didn't need him to diagnose anything, there was no repair involved, all I needed was someone who can desolder and then resolder without destroying my ECU's contact pads. Again he told me that he doesn't touch ECUs. . .even though it was a simple soldering job. At this point, he also told me that he has no way of ordering parts for electronic devices, specifically a socket for my ECU. . .at this point my mind was completely blown. Not only did he not want to even open my ECU to see what the job entailed, he flat out told me that he wouldn't do it, and couldn't order a socket if he wanted to. This is really a double purposed post. First I wanted to vent about ESL's inability to do anything dealing with electronics. Second, I wanted to see if anybody had an extra socket laying around and/or knew someone/a shop that can do it for me without shipping the ECU or driving an hour away to RX4speed. It should be noted that I live in Ewing NJ. Any help would be appreciated. |

you know, i was going to. . .but I've seen online everyone saying "DON'T DO THIS YOURSELF OMG YOU'LL RIP OFF YOUR ECU CONTACT PADS!!!" and it kinda put me off. I don't have a solder sucker, which is apparently required equipment for this job, but I'm fairly proficient at soldering, I've just never had to unsolder anything.

Yeah desoldering braid will work for you if you don't have a desoldering station. We have plenty of 28-pin sockets that will work fine and do socketing services ourselves routinely.
I dunno how close we are to you, but we are located in Lansdale, PA.
