Bummer, but don't sweat it too much sometimes nice to get person to give it a real inspection incase you miss something that could be unsafe. Any guesses on the running rich issue.
Our truck is running rich and found an interesting post calling out the coolant Temp Sensor as going bad causing the motor to constantly thinking it's super cold and running in warm up mode. Just a thought. Goodluck and photograph the process!

Cracked downpipe sucking air before the O2 sensor is my guess. Replacing it asap. If it's not that, then it's a coolant temp sensor. Still trying to figure out the coolant dropping issue. If it's trapped air, it would have had to be a LOT of trapped air, it dropped about a liter so far.

I got my downpipe, and a ton of cooling system pieces today. Don't you just love it when you order a gasket for a new part, and the part comes with its own gasket so now you have two? /facepalm

Tore the engine bay apart today, grrr. During removal of the downpipe 5 studs broke off in the exhaust manifold, so I started into removing the exhaust manifold... I got the intake off with no issues and also got the top row of exhaust manifold nuts out no problem. I managed to destroy the two center nuts on the bottom row of studs. Going to take a dremel to the nuts and remove them to take my manifold off tomorrow. My brother is planning on dropping a spare 16v manifold off at our local machine shop to have the broken studs in that manifold removed. At least it should all go back together smoothly with brand new hardware, lol
Pics as requested (from the other day when I had to top up the coolant lol) Ignore the dude with long hair, lol |

Leaky coolant flange:
Hmmmm, I wonder why it leaked? The gasket was both torn and pinched out of the flange. The flange was also warped. All torn apart to replace the downpipe, haha. Crappy interior shot: |

Got it all back together yesterday afternoon. Replaced the bad tie rod end and still have the suspension clunk. I think it's the LCA bushings, the ball joint seemed tight. Gotta drive more to see if I fixed the coolant issue. The exhaust doesn't leak anymore, seems to run kinda rich still, might need to replace a temp sensor.

yay for pics! haha. You could do some serious window washing with that reservoir in your bay. I like the interior shot too. Hard lines on the interior dash match the exterior nicely.

Still losing coolant I believe. If I lose more tomorrow I'm tearing it apart and doing the waterpump and t-stat. Not much else that could leak, lol. Royal pain in the ass to remove the waterpump, but oh well.

I was up until 2 AM swapping the waterpump and t-stat. The old t-stat housing on the bottom of the waterpump was warped. Too much coolant dumped out to tell if it was leaking, but I wouldn't be surprised. I replaced the t-stat housing with a metal one so it won't warp again. |

some nice progress there. What was the t stat housing made of before?

Just some cheapo plastic like the flanges on the head.
I've determined that I need a new power steering belt, it's stretched beyond use I'm afraid. It's tightened all of the way and it's still loose and chirps at full lock. I got to test the brakes tonight avoiding a deer. They all work brilliantly and I left a nice big cloud of smoke behind as evidence. edit: Samco hose kit is only $240 for all of the silly molded hoses. Might be worth it down the road, the new OEM hoses are just as expensive. Last edited by DocWalt; 10-11-2012 at 09:45 PM. |

Found the leak today, didn't take a pic though. One of the hoses to the oil cooler must have been disturbed when I was doing the work on the water pump, because it's leaking like crazy.
On a better note... I fixed my awful headlights! The original owner had installed H4 housings but never did the wiring correctly, so the high beam and ground wires were swapped. Fixed it and now my headlights are MUCH brighter. Swapped out my power steering belt for a new one, so now I no longer have chirpy belts. I also fixed my dome light. It was corroded internally, and the door switches were bad. I swapped in the switches from my brother's crashed Golf and it now works perfectly. What's left of my brother's Golf... |
