Mishimoto Releases Hyundai Genesis 2.0T Race Intercooler!
Today is the day we have been looking forward to for a long time. Mishimoto is proud to announce the release of our new Genesis Coupe Race Intercooler Kit! 2010-2012 Hyundai Genesis Race Edition Intercooler & Piping Kit Features & Benefits - YouTube When we produced our street kit back in 2010 when the Genesis Coupe was brand new, we knew that the car was going to be a hit – but we had no idea how quickly! Our original design, utilizing our Z-Line intercooler, was engineered to work with stock to mildly-modified stage 1 cars (around the 225-250 HP range). Almost immediately, the Genesis Coupe community was pushing this car to 300, 400, even 500 HP. Some immediate feedback we received from our customers was that they wanted an intercooler which could handle more power, but did not require them to lose the safety feature of the factory crash bar in the front of the vehicle. We got to work on what would later be named the J-Line right away. We went through rigorous testing of new intercooler sizes, core configurations, fin densities, and surface finishes in order to achieve the desired result. First, we utilized computational fluid dynamic (CFD) testing in SolidWorks to maximize the size and flow of the intercooler. Once we had the size locked down, we had a few produced with different cores using the same robotic welds and cast endtanks as the final production units. We tested the difference between straight and staggered core fins, and found that the staggered setup cooled better than straight fins. The fin density was much higher than the Z line given the power that we needed to cool. We also had a painted and unpainted intercooler running the same internal core to see if paint had any effect on performance. You can see the results here! Next up was to test our IC out on a high horsepower Genesis Coupe. Our good friends at Jotech Racing invited us down to their facility in Garland, Texas to test our new design on their world record holding 587whp Genesis Coupe build. We ran a number of performance tests at 17, 20, and 25psi to see how our intercooler held up against the bigger units that require crash bar removal. At the 25psi test we even decided to run 105 octane race fuel. Even at that level, the J line was pushing outlet air temps close to ambient! Check out the full engineering report in the next post to see the graphs and details of our testing!
