Bump starting

Ive read about this on wikipedia and other sites, but I am confused as to how its done. The idea is if you have a dead battery someone can give you a push as you are in 1st with the clutch to the floor, and then you release the clutch and it starts the car??? Has anyone done this? Does it work? Just wondering because it might come in useful one day and I dont want to be left in the parking lot if noone has jumpers

1. just get a set of jumpers

2. because you have forward momemtum, when you drop the clutch it will getthe engine moving and therefore the alternator, which will provide your engine with electricity, allowing your car to start and if you leave it running your battery will charge. this is assuming that your alternator is good. someone correct me if im wrong but Im pretty sure that this is how it works

The hard part is getting the car up to like 15mph if there is no incline around. But it works. I did it a few times with the camaro when i was having trouble with the starter.

You dump the clutch like you have never dumped it before. I usually did it in reverse cause i was rolling backwards out of a driveway.

LOL I had to do this in my CRX all the time because it just sat for long periods of time...yea I use second gear and just get a good roll going on and you will be able to start it...The battery is only really used for starting the car, spinning the starter and all so pretty much you are using the cars momentum to turn the engine over...I wouldn't make a habit of it but it does help when you are in a bind!!

5mph is fine I think. I remember pushing 96Stang's old 5.0 mustang in a 7-11 parking lot. I pushed him towards the street and was like "if this doesnt work, make sure you stop before you get to the street" haha

I have never heard of anything directly breaking due to this, but it does put more stress on the car than "average" driving or jumpstarting

i did it once, but not on purpose....i blew an IC pipe and i was almost back to my friends house, car stalled and i was already going down the hill, so i just dropped it in 2nd gear and let the clutch out, the car fired up and i got it home
