782/2000: Too rare to live, too weird to die - Phase 3: So long.

Today is a great day. I finally purchased a car that has eluded me for literally years. 1991 Mitsubishi Galant VR4, number 782 of 2000 imported directly from Japan. Pictures and more info to follow shortly.

Basically: 91 782/2000

From the ad:
141101 on the clock.
No major rust on body or dents.
interior is mint, no rips or tears.
sunroof works and does not leak.
less then 15k on block and trans
Engine:
Rebuild Short Block
Crower Camshafts Stage 2 272/272
Crower Valve Spring & TI Retainers
Extensive intake and exhaust port work
Balance shaft eliminator kit
Old school intake manifold

Turbo:
Evo3 16g

Trans:
T.R.E STAGE 4 TRANSMISSION
ACT Flywheel
ACT Heavy Duty Sprung 6-Puck Clutch Kit

Suspension:
Eibach Pro Kit
KYB AGX Adjustable shocks Rear Pair
KYB GR-2 / Excel-G shocks Front Pair
Goodridge Stainless Steel Brake Lines

Other Aftermarket parts:
Koyo Aluminum Race Radiator
Extreme Turbo Systems 7" Street Intercooler Kit
TiAL 50mm Q Blowoff Valve
Full 3in' exhaust systems
Afpr Rewired walbro 255
2gmaf fresh plugs.

Dude had it set up with a 35R, double pumper fuel, and Link and wrecked his C63 basically as soon as he got it sorted out and running. Long story short is that I got it with the E316G, 450s, 2G MAF, 272s on stock ECU, and while it "runs" it is not happy about it for obvious reasons. Took it for about a mile cruise to make sure it would go through gears and whatnot, and as soon as it gets out of the low end where the MAF and 450s are not quite getting along, it boosts along happily with decent AFRs and pulls strong. Picked up V3Link already and as soon as I get a tag on the car in the next few days, I'll baseline and start street tuning a bit; shouldn't be too bad.

The car was set up on an e316g, 2g maf, chipped ecu and 510cc injectors. I changed it and ended up running dsmlink v3 and sd.

When I got the car it was in rough shape. I did a 5 lug swap and cleaned it up a lil bit. The motor finally let go (would smoke under boost) and I ended up parting it. I sold the shell to a guy in north jersey and he put it back together to sell it to the guy you got it from.

Pics are incoming, but the MINI is having some issues and the G isn't quite roadworthy yet and it's been a race to get it sorted out. Finally got it tagged and insured after a slight delay, so now I can actually drive around a log a bit to see what's what. When I bought it, it was a cobbled together 2G MAF/stock injector mess with a partial speed density installation going on, running a Tial BOV VTA (an obvious issue on a MAF car).

Installed DSMLink and an Innovative WBo2 and integrated it so that I can log it in Link, then started going through the ECU to restore some factoryish settings. There's lots of weird little tweaks to be made because of the previous set-up on the car, so I have to be sort of attentive to what I'm combing through when looking at the settings. The tuning itself should be straightforward since I'm essentially running a stock car with a bigger turbo on WG pressure.

Thanks, I'm going to need it. The bones of a good car are there, but somebody at some point (not pointing too many fingers) hacked this car together pretty good. Just discovered that the alternator has died and that it's been relocated to a joyous position on the back of the block, so there's that to deal with, and also the fans do not come on for the rad. Lots of fun stuff to fix and deal with.

Things to do/fix:
  • Replace alternator, probably solder a bunch of wiring judging by the messes I've found elsewhere.
  • Loom and tuck away the wiring I've had to do in the cockpit, and mount the ECU and check light/calibration switch for the LC1.
  • Try to get the idle and the fuel pressure sorted out. I though I had nailed it last night before discovering the dead alt, so the finicky idle may be a product of poor voltage.
  • Wrap/coat everything that is producing all that heat in the engine bay
  • Re-tune.

Sound straightforward enough, so let's see what I can make happen.
