how much do you go through every winter and what sq ft is your house?

im looking at an end row house thats about 1200 sq ft, has a 275 gal tank in the basement. if im super thrifty with it is it possible to stretch 275 gallons all winter or should i expect it to be filled twice

I rent a place that's maybe around 1100-1200 sq/ft and have a 250 gallon tank. I've gotten the tank filled in mid-late November and had it last till the end of February. I keep the heat way down though and i have a programmable thermostat. During the day it's down around 55. 4pm it goes up to around 63-64ish and stays there till 10pm. Then it drops to 60ish till 7am when i go to work and back to 55 it goes. My hot water is also oil but that doesn't really use too much oil. I can make 75 gallons last 2 months when it's just doing the hot water.

It seems getting the tank filled 3 times a year is average for me. But i live in an old place, built in the early 1900's, and it isn't insulated the best nor are my windows much good at keeping heat in/out.

You'll generally get a discount if you pay in cash for your oil and the price goes down the more you get delivered in one shot. But your still talking 6-700 bucks to fill that tank of yours @ 2.34/gallon (my last price).

Alot depends on how well the house is insulated rather then just size. I would guess you would need maybe 2 tanks of oil.

Agreed, insulation is key. Then the heat wouldnt have to come on as often, yadda yadda yaddda. im sure you get the idea.

~3000sq ft...filled our tank 3 times this past winter. You'll probably get away with 1 tank if you're thrifty.

I don't know the exact size but I believe it's 250-300 gallon. Heat is set low actually...usually around 64-65 degrees. It's a big house but I have a feeling it has bad insulation in spots.

That's an insane amount of oil to go through. Does it do your hot water too? Do you keep a constant temp in the house or does it cool down at times? Regardless of all that, you go through an insane amount of oil. That's gotta be close to 2k a season you spend.

We keep the house at 60 when we're not around and 64 when we're home. The bill for the 3 fills was around $1300-$1400 IIRC. I know there is poor insulation somewhere, just need to figure out where.

Clearly your getting a better price per gallon than i am. My last fill, @ 2.34/gal., ended up being almost 600 bux.

This home was built in 1925 but everything was just redone and they have all new replacement windows, hopefully it's not terribly ****ty.

I have 1000sq ft. The temp is always up (70+) cause I have 3 kids and wifey wouldn't dare make them put on a couple more layers and rough it out. It also heats our hot water, I think we used 500 gallons (probably not that much) last year Jan-Dec.. We try to keep the wood burning stove kicking whenever possible. Oil sucks, baseboard heat sucks, Homes suck.

I don't know the square ft not too big, or the size of the tank but we go through 3 tanks of oil here. I have to use one of the timer/ no tip shut off heaters in my daughters room over night, because she cant keep blankets on. Its a rental house and the landlord wants to switch it over to all electric. Ac/heat/hot water.hot water is gas line, and ac is window ugh. But the house is not insulated well. I'm usually taping up windows and putting plastic over our big unused sliding door.
