4G63 Dragsters First two passes - Video inside

My dad and I have been building a 4G63 dragster to compete in NHRA's I-dragster class for almost a year now. We ordered the chassis from Ken's Kustom Chassis back in December of 2007 and began getting everything together in the May/June time frame of 2008. We got it fired up for the first time a couple months ago, took it to the dyno and it was finally ready for some shakedown passes this past weekend at Atco.

Here are some specs on the car:
2.0L 4G63
Runs on Methanol with 12x1600cc injectors and a huge mechanical pump
GT4202R turbocharger
GM Powerglide transmission
Ford 9" rear differential
Target weight 1500lbs with driver

Here is a video of the first two passes ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ejqe-c-fwI

Keep in mind, we're taking it easy on the car since prior to this day, the car had never seen more than about 3 MPH pulling it into the trailer. Also, our torque converter is too tight at the moment which lead to those horribly slow launches. We're getting the converter loosened up now.

I have to thank AEM for all their support with the electronics on the car as well as Extreme PSI for all the great parts in this car. I have to also thank Hamm's Machine Shop for a motor that's withstanding the abuse we're putting it through.

We pulled the converter tonight to send it off. Its supposed to take a week to get loosened so I'm hoping we can have it back for testing by the beginning of May.

Thanks for the words guys. We're really excited about how well it performed so far. Low boost and practically no acceleration for the first 300ft of track, 156 MPH seems pretty decent.

Pretty exciting to finnally see it make a pass. Can't wait to see it in person at "The Showdown" but hopefully i'll see it at atco beforehand.

Great looking car, and a great idea for power. NHRA's Comp Eliminator is such a demanding class, it's the only place left for the real hot rods such as yours. Best of luck with it and keep posting your results. We'll be watching!

Wow so that was you and your dad saturday? I was there to see it. Really clean deal you got there. I was racing and so was my buddy in Super Pro.

Inline I don't think he can run Comp Eliminator with that car. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure not. That Top Dragster class is tough. I have a friend who got a nice sponsor and has a lot of the good stuff. Better be running 7.20s or quicker to qualify and is still all about consistency.

Comp Eliminator and Top dragster are two entirely different things. I/Dragster is an NHRA Comp Eliminator class that runs off of a pre-determined class index. Top Dragster is a dial-your-own-time bracket racing type of class only run at divisional meets. While that little dragster would be a killer in Comp, I doubt it would be a good bracket car.

Yeah I know what top dragster is, I just read his first post wrong thinking the I meant 1 as in Division 1 in his first post. The comp eliminator is a little more confusing for me on how they figure out your index.

Thanks guys. It's been a lot of work to get to this point but it's been fun.

We're planning on running the car in Comp Eliminators I-dragster as inlineracer said. The current index is 7.30, which means we need to be able to go faster than 6.80 to be competitive. We're obviously still pretty far from there but the first passes were promising. We still on a "junk" motor at low boost and really far off on the converter setup. There will be a lot more to come.

We also plan on running some top dragster from time to time, just to make an appearance. The car won't be a bracket car by any means but top dragster races are typically dominated by 600+ cubic inch methanol big blocks, half of which are blown these days. Imagine showing up and qualifying with 122 cubic inches? For some reason they are making us add weight to the car though, which I don't get. We have less than a 1/4 the displacement of any other car in the class and we have to weigh almost as much as them. We'll still go and have fun though. That's the goal for this car.

That is one cool little digger, and one of only 3 "I" cars in the country that I know of. It's great to see cars like that being built. I'll be watching how you progress with it, and if you need any parts or assistance, I will be available at S&W Race Cars in the Sales Dept. starting May 4. Please keep us posted on how you're doing.
