New RED cameras

This stuff is getting out of control.
I honestly don't know that much about these yet but figured I'd post since I'm sure one of you does.

Basically, totally interchangeable (including sensor) professional and hyper-professional cameras. How do you feel about 261 MP, besides that it's total overkill? I guess if you want to paint the roof of your mansion with a crop from a picture you took on vacation, that's the camera for you! I don't know what else you would do with a 186x56mm sensor (that does 28000x9334 stills and 28k video or 9K video at 50fps) but it's awesome technology.

I'm more intrigued by the still-photography sensor sizes, like the FF35, 35MM, 16-bit sensor that is still 6K-video capable. And if we really will be able to use Nikon and Canon glass, this will be pretty wild.

Definitely sick, but prepare to sell your house for a higher model.

Word, the big sensors are way expensive, but still in comparison to other cameras in this class (not that they really exist) they're not THAT bad. And I love both Nikon and Canon glass, but the RED line is getting pretty stacked even for 35MM sizes.
I was hoping you'd post since you know more about this stuff than I do. How compelling is this vs. the 5DII for people wanting a small(er) camera that does both stills and video, or will it all be speculation for a while?

Two totally different leagues....

The 5D II is no replacement for a video camera. I only want it because it eliminates the need for me to use a massive adapter to get 35mm 1.8 DOF.

The base "brain" that lets you use canon and nikon lenses costs 7k, and it only goes up to 30fps. Then keep in mind the cost of batteries, monitor, and other modules.

It's a pro camera and the price reflects it.

I'm looking at it and I don't even see how you change the settings on it???

hahaha I was thinking the same thing when I was looking at it, I have no idea how the controls work.

Good info, I didn't realize the adapter started at that level, and figured as such about the 5DII. Pretty impressive in terms of what's to come in the next decade, though.

i've read about these before. basically you can build the type of camera you want/need instead of buying multiple cameras, the red system is module based. it;s quite an intelligent approach. pricey but smart.

working in the av industry for years now I wouldn't say that those large sensors are overkill at all. Think about the olympics and the video footage and projection sizes. you want to project something that is 20' tall but still look good from 5-10' away you need more than just the normal 1080p resolution. granted for a broadcast system this is way overkill, but i know a few installations that would benefit from having such a large pixel space. The lobby of the comcast building in Philly would be one of them. granted thats just LED but still, another would be IAC's video wall at the chelsea piers. it uses 18 edge blended 1080p projectors to create one image. The pixel space was approx. 19000 pixels wide by 1920 pixels tall. That equaled a 11'x120' video image that you can walk right up to.

all in all i think it's awesome technology and definitely has it's uses.

Their system is called DMSC (Digital Motion & Still Camera) The lower end ones aren't really worth it for photography given that its a 3MP size image, which is big for video, but not for photo. Prices aren't out for the modules and none of the stuff will be cheap so don't think that this will be a Canon killer or something of the sort, this is real professional video stuff.

The base brain (AKA just the sensor module, no viewfinder, no battery, no lens, NOTHING!) to shoot 10MP images is already beyond the price range of a 5DII.

Also if you want to see samples of the kind of things that will be done with these cameras look up the RED ONE. It was their previous camera also made to be modular like this new system.

The more I look at it, the more awesome the specs are... and the more I realize that it is the ugliest camera ever ever ever. Ever. If robots pooped, that's what it would look like.
