Input on a 2001 A4 1.8 for a daily

Hey guys im looking at getting a daily soon so i dont have to drive the sti everywhere and i was looking at the 96(?) to 2001 Audi A4s with the 1.8T motor, would just like some info on them and if anyone owns them, what they think of it. Would most likely get a manual and what ive found out so far is that they get 20 and 29mpg respectively and have either 150hp or 170hp (2001) engines. Thanks guys!

Just got rid of one. They're relatively expensive to maintain...service cost is average with most german cars...a good bit higher than Japanese cars. The 1.8T is also a sludge machine if you don't regularly change the oil. I'd honestly pass on that. Perhaps find a 2.8 quattro if you're set on the car.

Hmmm on paper they seem pretty good and i was going to stay away from the 2.8 considering the 16mph city but ill def have to do some more research on the car before i consider it. I will need to find something before i start to build the motor next summer.

After hearing what a friends of mine who worked in the service departments of Audi dealerships said about Audis, I'd stay away from almsot all Audis that are more than a couple years old. I hear similar things from my Audi owning friends. One was an Audi Nazi until recently when he finally swore off Audis and said he would never buy another one after spending more on repairs in two years than the car cost to buy.

really? newer audis are fine to me.. my 20year old audi is a pos.. my 1.8t GTI has never left me stranded however.. maintenance is not that crazy and you can usually do it unless your a lazy...

everyone in here that has replied doesnt even own one..
im sure if you talk to people who work on fords all day they would say not to get one either.

i will say this however, never go for the early models. their maybe 2 HP ratings for audi 1.8t's but there are more models to the engine than that.

I highly doubt the 2.8 gets that s***** gas mileage. My charger weighs way more heavier and my engine is bigger and I get about 20 city. I understand it's awd but I'm sure it's not that bad

German cars are so expensive to maintain it's crazy. Parts are probably a lot more expensive than say parts for mine

Thats what all the reviews say...remember this is before variable valve tech and **** like that. the ratings are 16 city and 24 highway...i **** you not lol. i would love to get one (2001 1.8T) but with all this negativity its kinda changing my mind. They can be had to 5-8k and thats leather, sunroof, everything with ~100k miles. Wont be looking to modify it at all and itll just be taking me to school and work. Worst comes to worst its civic time.

Before I got mine, I really wanted this same car. However for me, it was too small for me lol. I'd try going with the next gen a4. Those are nicer and probably more reliable and I'm sure you can find one really affordable. Good luck with the search. Car searching is fun! I do it just to see what's out there lol. Ever consider a jetta? It's basically the same thing and you could easily find one loaded for cheap. Just a suggestion

If my washer nozzles are $30 for the pair, I can only imagine how much for an Audi

Pig tail for a coil pack? Seriously? Who checks on pricing for that? But since you did and called everyone out, GM coil pack pig tail- under $9 at your local parts store.

easy guys no need for arguments, but i would really look into the 1.8t jettas, but theres one problem..my GF has a 2.0 jetta and i drive her around and i dont fit very well (knee is against steering wheel...not good to press in the clutch) so thatd be the only thing limiting my choices when it comes to them.

Actually no, because I know a Ford tech and he wouldn't discourage anyone from buying a 5-10 year old Ford. However the Audi techs don't drive Audis and tell their family members not to buy them unless its a new one on a 2 to 3 year lease. Its not because they repair Audis all day, its because of the kind of problems they see when repairing Audis and Audi's fix or lack of a fix for some problems.

Like I said, I know someone who was an Audi Nazi. If it wasn't an Audi it was crap to him. After 10+ years of unusual mechanical problems, high repair costs, and his 1990's Plymouth neon being more reliable than any Audi he owned, he gave up on Audis. I also have other friends that either own or owned Audis in the past 10 years. None of them plan to buy another one.

Go research owner surveys and dependability studies of automobiles sold in the U.S. Audis from more than 5 years ago continuously rate among the lowest in reliability, among the lowest in dependability, among the highest in owner reported problems and among the highest in warranty repairs during the first 3 years of ownership.

Audi's and SAAB's are the two brands of cars that I hear the owners continuously complain about and the brands where the techs I know or knew said not to buy that brand of car.
