Clutch on 2.7t S4 - pics to share!

Just thought I'd share a few pics while working on getting this clutch done.

Southbend stage 3 OFE with RS4 pressure plate. Only 2 issues - first being this is second clutch atleast and only 96k on the car (somebody was in there before, previous owners) and second the flywheel uses different bolts than OEM which southbend is having made as I type.

Not an overall bad job coming apart considering it was done in the garage on jack stands.

Cool, the biggest pain on those is the heat shields X2 if they are rusted and downpipe flange nuts. That trans isn't that light either.

Only problems for me were some hack overtightened all the bolts and left some out it seems when they last worked on it. The heat shields were no issue - they stay on the turbo and the downpipes slid right out.

But yea that trans is heavy, I hard a hard time holding up the tail section with the jack holding most of the weight.

Wheel gap can be compared to a vaginaa. The more fingers you can stick in the worse off you are.

It wasn't one of my most fun jobs, but I would probably do it again. I'm not sure how into helping I would be - it is too big of a job. How many miles do you have on yours that it is already slipping?

Guess I never posted more pics either... it is all done now, pedal feel is still good and drives good minus the short shifter being notchy.

It's not my car it is a customer's car. I don't know the brand of short shifter either. He should be back for k04's and more work in the future though...

Why is your clutch shot at 10k miles? Do you drive it that hard? I am expecting this to last longer than that. Good call on the stasis trans though

Nice, thats a pretty nice looking clutch.
I was wondering the weight of the trans since the STi trans is such a beast.

I would want to first guess around the 250 range (I am only 115lbs myself, so it doesn't take much for me to think its heavy) but I think I read online it is only about 180lbs.

I wasn't about to weigh it while out of the car though. The 180lbs. is probably without fluid. The trans is long and awkward though

yeah when you have 6 forward gears plus a front and center diff, its pretty serious.

Slipping during launch is probably better than some of the welded-together clutches I've seen, lol. K04's are especially nice with a good tune.

I would guess its probably a bit heavier. The gear housing is iron. While the bell housing and front diff housing is aluminum.

You would not believe how heavy the new S5 6 speed transmission are. Close to 250-300 pounds completely crazy.

It may be heavy, but doesn't compare to the W8 passat automatics or touareg transmissions I've had out...

I believe it. The Q7 shares the same trans. I have only taken them out with the engine together on the electric scissor table. So much easier. And the w8 if I'm not mistaken shares the same type of trans as Audi's 4.2 A6's, only 3.0l and the new 3.2l. I haven't had the pleasure of removal yet....haha.

They are known for torque converters... I may be pulling an RS6 automatic transmission out in the future as well :/
