I've used a hairdryer to soften it and a nice strong putty knife to scrape it off.

In the car that I stripped, there were two kinds of sound deadening. The top layer was a thick, heavy layer of padding that felt almost like cotton. It was pretty easy to pull out since it wasn't really glued to the floorboards so well. The bottom layer was almost like a dried rubbery tar (think Dynamat) that had to be heated and scraped off. In some places, it was very dry and could be pulled off in chunks with my fingers. In other places, it was gooey and had to be scraped off.

If your car is older, it may come off a little easier than in a newer car. I helped my buddy gut his 86 VW GTi, and it took a while. We just kept scraping until we got it all off. Beer helps.

Dry Ice, let it sit for about 5 mins on the spot your working on. Then take a scraper and a hammer and watch it fall out in chunks.

I hear tranny oil has a nice way of softening it up and making it easy to wipe clean. If this is true I would assume any kind of oil would do the same including brake fluid. Of course be ready to put down new paint since brake fluid will definitely eat into that too.
