Donating Bone Marrow

Anybody here ever donate bone marrow? I've read about it online, but I'd like to hear about it from people who have had actual experience with this. I want to know what the side effects are and if it's painful. I've read online where it says there's no pain at all and other places it says it's extremely painful.

My friend's mother was just diagnosed with Leukemia so I'm considering donating to her. I'm hesitant because I have a very low tolerance for pain. I mean, I passed out when I had my belly button pierced and that barely even hurt.

My wife did it for her younger brother in the mid 90's. She says it was extremely painful and still feels the effects from it today. I would imagine a large needle inserted into the bone of your pelvis area would be anything but comfortable. Her tolerance for pain is also off the chart, so keep that in mind also.

While it very noble to want to even consider donating marrow, I believe there is a series of compatibility test you must first go through.

Good luck.

Yeah, I know that I must be compatible in order to donate to her. I just wanted to make a decision on whether or not I'd be able to go through with it before having the tests done.

If you are not a sibling than the chances of being compatible are off the chart.

I have a friend that is suffering from lukemia. Neither his mother, father, nor brother matched well enough to even try. His sister however was a 4 out of 5 (whatever that means) so they did the surgery. It has been 2 weeks, and he is still running a fever of 104-105. His is constantly on ice and antibiotics. So even that close of a match doesn't take very well. good luck.

One of my neigbors (a kid at that) has had a bone marrow TRANSFUSION for his Leukemia...and he is soo messed up from the pain of it.

He can't feel certain things, or feels them later, it REALLY puts a toll on your WHOLE body...and what he says...your MIND especially.

True. It didn't work out for my wife and her brother. They evidently were as a good as a match as you could get.

This is the exact reason my wife and I decided to have core cells frozen when both our sons were born. I hope to never use them, but its somewhat reassuring knowing they are there, if needed.

its very unlikely that you would be a match, but if you are, just do it.. don't think about the pain, just think about helping someone else and how good it will make you feel

The guy he roomed with though had 2 brothers and a sister that was a perfect match. Less than a week after his surgery he was up and walking around.

You're a very generous person to do so. It is painful... I had cancer a year and a half ago.. and for tests, they had to take out some of my bone marrow. You can most likely elect to go under anesthesia for the pain during the surgery, but after you will need some painkillers. They basically fracture your hip bones in your lower back. The pain will last about a week or so and diminish. IMO, a week of some discomfort on yourside to help your friends mother is very worth it. Good luck to you and your friends mom.

I have back/neck problems as it is and I don't want them to get any worse, which is why I was asking about the side effects. My back is bad enough as it is.

I like to help people too but donating bone marrow is some serious stuff.

If you've already got joint//bone problems...this is probabally a bad idea.
