School me on the GTI 2.0Ts

I'm considering getting a 2008 GTI, and I would prefer the 2.0T. I don't know much about them. Are they better then the previous 1.8T? Any info will be great. Also any forums I should check out?

Golfmkv.com has a decent forum. A lot of things you read online aren't always the most accurate though, and remember everyone has their own opinion on certain things.

If it is a 2008 it has a choice of 2 engines. One is driven by chain and the other by belt. The early belt engines have seen some oil consumption issues, but in my experience it is usually from improper maintenance. Also there are cases of camshafts wearing out because the high pressure fuel pump rides on it. Again, this is usually from using the wrong oil or not changing it often enough. Overall it isn't a bad engine and the market is really opening up quickly with VW.

The chain engine is much newer. It seems to have very good potential though. They revised the fueling system to prevent the same problems with the belt engine.

Both of these drivetrains are strong. It takes a lot to break an engine or transmission with the build quality of VW. If you plan to build either of them you can break 350hp on the stock engine, but will require a bigger turbo and fueling. The weak point will be the rods. I'm not sure how much you are interested in mod'ing it, so if you want I can go into further detail.

Not sure any specific questions you may have feel free to ask and we'll reply as best we can.

You can tell the difference by the engine cover (unless aftermarket parts are used)...

Chain motor (tsi):

Belt motor (fsi) similar to this:

Thanks, I will check that out. Not going to start modding it right away (thats if I do get one). Like with all the cars I have been considering, I will be doing my research, but figured I would ask if anyone knew of any sites to check out.

It got sold. I am open to all options, and figured this fits in there also.

You can make about 270hp reliably with stock turbo... they can run great and over 300tq. If you do ever go that route.

there is a 2006 for sale in the classifieds!! for cheap. I am a member of GolfMKV.com. There is alot of the standard BS on that forum but there are also tons of really smart owners. Its a great world wide forum. I can honestly say i thoroughly enjoy driving my car every day.
