Talking My Newest Hypermiler: 2003 Volkswagen Golf TDI

After looking and not finding the right diesel car in this area I finally found one up in Mass. My buddy and I made the trek up there in my Trans Am. 5 hours of driving there and 6 driving back but worth it. Here's the one I picked up:

It's got 245k on it, which for a TDI that's nothing. If you check out TDI Club you'll see quite a few in the 600,000 and even 700,000 mile range.
I haven't refilled since the drive home so I'm not sure of my FE on the drive home, but these average 50-60 highway from those with whom I've spoke. It is a 5 speed, 2 door. The prior owner was the original owner and drove 60 miles a day from NH to a Boston, Mass. suburb.

I have a set of studded snow tires with steelies on it now. The PO also gave me a set of summer wheels/tires.

I'll post non-cell phone photos when I have some time.

I saw your post on VWvortex about tuning. There are plenty of options. Malone Tuning, RocketChip, TDTuning are your big TDI specific tuners. I believe people have had great success with Green Diesel Engineering, as well, lately. They all have great reviews on TDI Club. Mark Malone of Malone Tuning, and Jeff at RockChip are largely considered the TDI tuning gurus.

Also, RocketChip is right here in PA in Red Lion. Malone, despite in Canada, has an outstanding dealer network down here.

Steve, I've done enough shoveling in the last week to hold me for a few years lol.

Thanks guys!

Unsure on the FE thus far. Have not yet filled up.

Pat, thanks for the information! I was hoping to find someone here the West Chester area to do the tuning. I did find a few on the Guru's list, one in West Chester, and another couple not too far away. I'll be purchasing a VAGCOM and doing some timing tweaks. My buddy has a '98 TDI Jetta and he got 3-5 MPG increase with some timing adjustments using his VAGCOM.

Vagcom is a priceless tool. I'm glad I bought one.

So I hear! Airbag light is on. I'm assuming it's a connector/wiring. Will need to VAGCOM it and check to see what's going on.

One tank through thus far. 3/4 highway (Most at 85 MPH following Steve-Oh back from Mass), 1/4 backroads & stuck and spinning tires, and mind you this is winter blend diesel as well:

Sounds about right. My fiance and I drove up to Vermont and back on a single tank, that was roughly 650 miles. 65 mph the whole way. 56 mpg

Some more cell shots...

AC died on the way back from Nashville, TN. With the dog and temps in the mid 90's, that was not a fun drive home. Easy fix though... $30 in eBay parts later and freezing cold AC:

I've put 13,000 miles on the car since February. New rear pads/rotors needed:

Then took it for a cruise down to my aunt/uncles in OC, MD:

I'm doing a D2S square bi-xenon HID projector retro shortly as this is my main commuter vehicle. Darkness on my drive home is no bueno with stock headlights.

My buddy just drove his tdi jetta out Washington, and down the PCH. He's averaging around 45 mpg.

I wish i could pick one up for a decent price. I only work 8 miles from my house though.

I'll be honest, I've owned 30+ vehicles over the years from a 3000GT VR-4 to an E36 M3 to a Land Rover, 8 Jeeps, a few f-body's, and more. This TDI was the best vehicle purchase I have made.

With you living 8 miles from home it's definitely not something you need unless you drive a lot on the weekends or travel a lot by car. It is a fun little car, though. Love hearing the turbo spool up with my straight pipe (diesel vehicles are emissions exempt in PA). Nowhere near the acceleration of my Trans Ams but still fun.

I just wish there were more diesel cars to pick from, but that's just the demand. In Europe, I feel like every company makes a diesel option. Great pick-up! Mind if I ask how much it was? Last I looked cars like that were still fetching around 10k or more.

Absolutely agreed. If the new Wrangler comes out in the 2017 model year with a diesel I'm selling my two TA's and my Jeep and buying it.

I got it for a GREAT deal, hence why I drove up to Mass/NH to get it. It was rough, though, as you can see from the photos. You can pick these up under $3k if you don't mind putting some work into them. Here's one like mine, but auto, for less than $3k and 100k miles!
http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/4633361538.html

And a manual one for $2800:
http://delaware.craigslist.org/cto/4656547790.html

I've seen TDI's with measured mileage over 800,000. I believe the odo stops at around 645k or so, though.
