its the shape of awesomeness.

The white halo is formed by condensed water droplets which are thought to result from a drop in air pressure around the aircraft.

The only real experiment that was able to accurately prove this possible involved a professional with a bullwhip. It was proven that the bullwhip reach 1400f/s, the speed of sound being 1100f/s.

there was an experiment by some college kids: http://www.hiviz.com/PROJECTS/towel/towel.htm

they "proved" that a towel does break the sound barrier... but they couldn't continuously recreate their findings... so their one success is fairly moot. I also read a response regarding the experiment that they changed to a wet cotten bed sheet to achieve the result and could not with a generic towel
