2009 Philadelphia International Auto Show

The 2009 Philadelphia International Auto Show

January 31st to February 8th, 2009

The display at the 2009 Philadelphia International Auto Show is back this year at the Convention Center in Philly from Jan 31st through February 8th, sporting a theme unlike previous years.

With the harsh economic times, rise in alternative fuel technologies, and altered demands of the public comes an array of new and improved automobiles available to the consumer. As one of the largest Auto Shows in the country, there are plenty of products to see.

There was some controversy over whether or not the Auto Show should even go on, with the opponents arguing that the money spent on the show could have been better used to stimulate the economy. However, the Auto Show brings in much more revenue to the Philadelphia economy than it costs to run the show. Surveys have reported that the Auto Show’s displays influenced the purchasing decision for 90% of attendees that were in the market for a new vehicle.

It is also worth noting that the ADAGP (Automotive Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia) will continue to donate one dollar to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for every Auto Show ticket sold. They have raised over $3.8 million in the past 20 years.

On Sunday, February 1st, the Convention Center was buzzing. People filled the halls as they browsed through the various manufacturer displays, hopping in and out vehicles ranging from Corvettes to the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe.*

Nissan has their new 370z on display, which is making quite the buzz in the tuner community. “We were shooting for an affordable competitor to the BMW 1 Series and the Porsche Cayman,” Brian, a Nissan specialist explained.

“In a recent independent test, the 370z stopped from 60mph faster than a 911 equipped with the Porsche carbon-ceramic brakes.”
TriStateTuners has plenty of liaisons throughout the show. Levon Derkrikorian (MetalLevon) and his S5 are in the Miller Performance Group area. “I just lowered it and added European headlights,” Levon said, “new wheels are on the way.”

The Shades of Gray booth returns to this year’s auto show in the DUB Live! Section,*where you can find find Bill Vitale’s (CarbonIS) 2006 Subaru STi on display with a fresh new look including a GT30r turbo upgrade and reversed intake manifold courtesy of Area1320. Also on display are Joe Talarico’s (joeyt) Project2G Mitsubishi Eclipse, as well as another SOG client’s Nissan Skyline.

Damon Spano (ezdrummer) and Ryan Neas (Shades of Gray), both from Shades of Gray, were on hand throughout the show to talk to show goers about the cars on display as well as the services they offer including window tint, headlight film, and paint protection.

They were awesome enough to make sure to put a nice big TriStateTuners banner on display underneath their own, so a big thanks goes out to them for repping the forum at this years auto show.

Kerbeck had their annual display of exotics in the upstairs ballroom, but their elitist representatives refused to comment for TST. (If anyone from the F.C. Kerbeck group is reading this, I would like a written apology.)

In the hall just past the DUB section Mercedes and Lexus set up shop. Risa, a Lexus product specialist, educated Auto Show patrons about their new lineup. Among the most impressive for hybrid vehicles is the new HS Lexus 250h. “This vehicle is a first in many ways,” Risa commented “not only is it our first four-cylinder hybrid, but it is the first car from Lexus to be offered exclusively as a hybrid vehicle.”

According to Risa, 85% of the vehicle is composed of recyclable materials, but that does not affect the Lexus quality. “It is a midsized sedan with the largest trunk in the class.” Falling between the IS and ES, the HS will make its public debut in September 2009 and will be sold as a 2010 vehicle. No official fuel economy numbers have been released yet, but it is expected to perform as well as the Smart in the city at 33mpg.

Great article. I wish we could see the pictures in a gallery instead of that annoying slide show (even though i have a few hundred of my own from the show). SOG had a nice display. I'd also like to see more pics of that M45 that was next to SOG.
