I was set on finding a black R1 and one with decent mileage, when I came across one that fit my budget. I drove it home back from NJ with no problems, minus the little bit of smoke seeping out the engine bay. The car was stock except for the PFS exhaust, and around 77k miles. Drove the car for a bit until I could take it up to KDR (now Speed1) in the Allentown area to get checked out. Found out the turbos were on their last leg, vacuum lines were brittle and it already had a Mazda reman engine in it. Luckily the compression was fine and it didn't need much else. I opted for the '99 spec twins for the time being. During the next few months, I put on a '99 spec front lip, intake, downpipe, midpipe, Power FC, and had the car dyno tuned. Drove the car for a while until one day, boost dropped to 4psi, car had no power, so I regretfully decided to park it.... Last edited by teecap93; 12-05-2012 at 12:37 AM. |

While it sat, the stock radiator cracked, and once that happened I stopped starting it up periodically. Over the next year or so, my wife & I bought a house, and with the urging of a good friend, got the RX7 up to our house from my parents this past Memorial Day weekend.
Car ran rough... I started digging into it, and found the cause of my initial boost problem.. Stock piping from the turbos to the intercooler had split. $25 later, boost problem solved! Although, I was extremely mad at myself for letting the car sit for 6 years for something this simple. Also replaced the radiator and took the car out for a test up the road. Car popped as soon as it hit 10psi, so I was worried the PFC had reset from sitting so long and it was running on the base maps, so back to Speed1. They checked the car out, replaced the gas/plugs, threw it up on the dyno and car ran flawlessly! It actually held the tune, just the gas was really bad. I knew the gas would be an issue, but I didn't have anywhere to drain the old stuff, so I let them take care of it... |

Got the car back and have been driving it every weekend! Can't describe how much I missed driving it after having an SUV for the past 4 years.
Over the past month I've been doing some clean-up work to it, and detailing it. Turtle wax black box is awesome! Cleaned up the faded lip. If anyone has ever owned/ridden in an FD knows the stock passenger door handle is junk and probably 99% of them are broken. So I got an aluminum replacement handle to fix that problem. |

So this past weekend I decided to follow a write-up to convert my stock taillights to '99 spec taillights. The '99 specs look so much better imo. Once the lights were off, a few screws out and a few minutes of a heat gun and the light housings were separated. The worst part was finding a circle cutter...which I ended up getting a drywall circle cutter from Home Depot.
Once I set the contact paper circles on the lens, a few coats of black paint, reheating of the glue and putting them back together...

Thanks, I kind of debated alot back and forth of whether or not to do it. I agree the stocks look pretty good, but I've always enjoyed some of the '99 features.
Next project...relocating the battery to the passenger bin and getting the front mount installed.
