I considered both (and the Civic Si) before I got the Speed 3. The Speed had more power, and more room in the hatch. The VW definitely feels more refined, but I could care less about that. If I wanted refined I would have bought another Acura.

I dont really get why people put the honda logo on there acuras, to me an acura is like a luxury honda (if there is such thing) so putting the honda logo on it is like saying you bought a cheeper car, why would you want to do that

As has been said by others if you are buying new than the GTi is in the running. If used don't even consider it. I have had many family and friends own VW/Audi and want to kill themselves over electrical problems with the cars once they get older.
If I were in your dilemma I'd choose the Speed3. |

If you want to have fun with it, get the Mazda. You can be right at 300hp with very little work on a MS3. The thing with Mazda is that all their cars are drivers cars - meaning they are made for people to drive them and enjoy them and its especially true in their sports cars. In constant shootouts between the Cobalt SS, WRX, MS3, and the GTI - the MS3 was usually the #1 or #2 spot.
I really don't have anything positive or negative to say about the GTI. All I know is that I've had multiple friends that had VW (some modded, some bone stock) and they were absolute nightmares. If it were a TDI though, I'd say get that over anything ;)

Stock turbo is good to about 260-270whp with full bolt-ons. From there if you can find a deal you can run a ko4 for about $2200 extra and make over 300 whp. Also have big turbo options to make close to 500whp. I have a buddy's car here making between 4-450whp, but he has a built motor and some money invested

if you're looking to get into a vw, go for a mk6 if you can afford it. everything in the car is an improvement over the mk5. I have never owned, driven, or maintained a Mazda so I cannot speak about them, but I will say that VWs (when properly maintained) are excellent cars with a great deal of support(vwvortex) and aftermarket for parts. My 2000 vr6 has 115k miles and has needed nothing other than general maintenance with the exception of an A/C compressor that cost $350 and control arm bushings.
