And that's exactly why my truck will stay registered in VA 2.5" true duals, no cats, race mufflers, loud as hell. Windows are tinted too, all kinds of stuff NJ wouldn't allow. Jersey can bite me.

You know why New Yorkers are always pissed off?

Cause the light at the end of the tunnel is New Jersey

heh I got pulled over in my S2000 for having loud exhaust (I was actually just cruising at 5k trying to locate a problem) Anyway earlier that day I had my car inspected by a DMV and it passed with flying colors (everything is stock).
Cop gives me a ticket, I go to court with my DMV papers that I got the same day and I said look the cop doesn't know what he's talking about, DMV approved my FACTORY exhaust just 2 hours before. Judge said ok case dismissed.

Ladies and gentlemen, the aftermarket exhaust thing is bull****, I have an Apexi N1 3" Full Catback exhaust on my 240sx and I PASSED, Yes PASSED inspection with it. So it can't really be illegal if I passed INSPECTION. You know how anal those people are. As long as you have a CAT and a MUFFLER, no ILLEGAL exhaust ticket will NEVER hold up. BTW, I am in New Jersey, CHerry Hill.

I'm not so sure about the noise part, but if you go above a certain dB I think they can give you a ticket.
as for inspection wise, I emailed DMV before, they told me as long as you don't mod anything before the cat. then you are ok.

Ironicly enough I have a fairly quiet exhaust (cobb catted TBE). He even asked me to rev the engine when I gave him a blank stare after him telling me the above statement, confirming it with "it'll illegal, not that YOU didn't know that".

The odd part was when I drove past him (prior to being pulled over) I was in a high gear at a slower speed. In other words the exhaust was almost silent. So the whole exhaust bit was an afterthought after being pulled over for the lack of front plate.

Anyway I was very polite and was let off with a written waring accompanied by an oral warning- "You WILL be pulled over for this (exhaust) again."

Is there any validity to his claim? My exhaust is VERY conservative if anyone has heard a cobb catted TBE before. ?????

In theory this sort of ticket would be easy to fight.

Innocent until proven guilty. This means that the burden of proof is on the state/county/town. If they don't show up to court with proof that your exhaust is too loud then technically you win. I just wish it could actually work out like this.....

I got pulled over in Swedesboro a couple weeks ago for speeding and on top of that I was given a "noisy exhaust" ticket.

I talked to a lawyer about getting the speeding ticket dropped to a moving violation. Then I brouhgt up the noisy exhaust ticket and the lawyer responded "I never even heard of that". Then said he could have that dropped as well.

In the end. I have to face facts and admit my exhaust is loud. It's 2.5" mandrel bent with a Apex N1 melon launcher. So I can't really argue it when getting pulled over.

39:3-70 Noisy muffler

That's how it's worded...pretty general if you ask me. Cop thinks it's noisy, you get a ticket. No calibration certs needed. Innocent until proven guilty? Go to court...judge says it noisy too? You've been proven guilty and now you've wasted your time and tacked on court costs to boot. It's $54. I've paid plenty of them. Suck it up.

FYI, state inspection is for vehicle safety and emissions, not legality. You could have a case of open 40s on the passenger seat and they'd still pass you.

Good luck w/ that Tom...
The ticket's I've seen are noted as "Excessive Exhaust" and it basically is giving out when you're caught in a residential neighborhood and your making more noise than two 12" subs blasting down the road at 3am...

Yeah, if you're on a fresh reset, and the car didn't run the diagnostic yet, you still fail.
