Also, just so you can all laugh at me, here's a spreadsheet on everything that's gone into this build so far:

Made some great progress tonight!

(by the way if you're reading this and need iX parts let me know, I guarantee I have what you seek)

I spent the night buttoning up the front suspension and getting the Z3 rack in.

Z3 rack in with spacers up top to check the angle of the steering shaft and see what I need to modify. Running a full e30 inner/outer tie rod assy.

Finally have everything removed in the engine bay that I wanted gone. It's sealed currently, awaiting the next step.

And the moment we've all been waiting for.....

Before I can move onto the next steps, I have a metric ton of 325iXs parts that need a home, as well as a rwd 5sp swap and a ton of other stuff........ so if you need some parts, let me know. It's for a good cause ;)

Drained oil, refilled with 15w40 T5.

Rod knock.

Filled with STB oil stabilizer.

An OEM EJ255 shortblock with updated pistons and hardened crank is $2K which isn't so bad, I just wasn't ready for it. Not sure what direction to go, we shall see.

I've never had a car payment and really don't want one, but a fresh car is oddly tempting. A newer STI hatch or something of the like.

as appealing as it'd need to be for me to pull the trigger on one

Also, there are 5 on CL in my area, all of which have had some sort of rod bearing failure. I don't know if I feel comfortable getting into another Subie with such a 'common' high failure rate of integral parts.

But my options for reliable, affordable, AWD hatchback style vehicle with manual trans that can pull a small enclosed are slim, so who knows.

The knock is still bad, but quieted down. Any bets on how long I drive this thing until a rod makes an exit?

OEM shortblock is $2K, head refresh $500, gaskets ~$200, plus a fresh clutch/turbo, new timing belt, water pump, etc, it all adds up to about $5K+ if I were to fix it. That's a lot of coin to invest into an '07 that only has the purpose of being a daily driver.

Your making me nervous for my forester, and I already was about the head gaskets.

Any chance of finding a partout motor?

I've been looking! Problem is, 04-05 XT motors at easy to find, but with this being an '07 it's an ej255 so it is only in the newer foresters/WRXs. Cheapest longblock I found was $2700 so far.

And as far as being nervous, I donno. I'm very easy on the car and take care of it, as did the previous owner. I don't have a lot of faith in Subaru right now, but it's the only brand I really feel comfortable buying for a daily.

Ahh its an XT. Explains the cost.

They are hard to beat as an everyday, including winter, car. We are very easy on ours as well but I'm always paranoid about some major engine issue.

Couldn't agree more. The less I am frustrated by the situation, the higher chance there is of me buckling down and fixing it. I also found a local guy who builds shortblocks for $1100 with forged pistons. A lot better than $2K!

Yep, I bought the XT because supposedly they claim it's the n/a cars that have the HG issues (and because it's cool). I haven't found much information in my personal experience to support that, though.

Oh most certainly! That bearing material gets in everything, and if you don't get it out you hear 'knock knock who's there' on your break in drive around the block.

Thanks man! I haven't been making much progress due to parting these other cars out, but my engine bay paint should be here any day so I can get to smoothing.

I also put 2+2 together and realized that I have the means to drop a 2.7l M20 stroker with an 885 cyl head (motronic 1.3) into the iS without so much as a clutch disc and a head gasket/timing belt kit. I'm considering this just so I can drive the car and enjoy it. I'll keep it as an option and continue collecting 24v parts, but after winter if I'm still not close I'm just going to throw that in so I can enjoy the car!

Also, this isn't a car update but figured you guys may enjoy this for the read. I've never been one to spend crazy $$ on tool boxes, because in the end, it's a piece of metal that holds your tools. (There are many opinions on this, I know).

With that being said, I love vintage boxes. My main box is a vintage Dayton top box, but have recently been looking for another vintage box for extra space.

Today I scored a loaded '76 bicentennial Snap On road side box for a song. I haven't cleaned it yet, but I'm going to lightly restore it, although it doesn't need much.

I dug into the Subaru tonight because something told me to check the timing components before I bought a shortblock. Low and behold the fresh Gates Racing components I installed at 110K failed at 146K and caused the entire timing system to eat itself. Much cheaper than an engine rebuild!

Wow! That's a lucky break. Gates normally makes quality components too, wild.
