Stock vs Extrudehone intake manifold

I had a client with a bone stock 2006 WRX come in for a base line about a week ago. He told me he had something he wanted to try out, I said great. So he did his mod, not telling me what it was and we put the car back on the dyno a week later. As you can see from the graph, just the extrudehoned intake manifold was worth a peak whp of 16, and peak wheel torque of about 8. But aside from peak numbers, the area under the curve has increased dramatically. Power deltas across the rpm range have increased as much as 20whp and torque at certain points. I think it is safe to say that the ported intake manifold is worth a solid 5-10% increase in power.

Good to see that the stock manifold can be improved upon.

I suspected there was power to be had by cleaning the intake up. Seeing as it looks like a relief map of the Gobi Desert.

This mod is normally not something that someone does by its self. It normally goes along with more extensive installs. So it was very nice to be able to see the singular gain from just the manifold work.

looks nice Andy. curious as to what he paid to have it done. Last I looked it was around $400 for a complete hone. IMO not worth the 15hp lol.

I bet if you are doing a high horsepower car there will be more gains from the manifold but the current setup really doesn't allow it to show it's true potential. I think those are pretty good gains for just swapping an IM, but I bet there is a lot more on the table in regard to peak performance if you are running a bigger setup. I'm curious to see what the TBE + Tune vs. TBE + IM + Tune differences are.

I think its actually a good deal. If you buy a turbo back exhaust you can expect to see around 20 more wheel hp. Most turbo back systems will run close to $1000. So for half the price of a turbo back, you can have half the horsepower and not have to worry about boost creep. Dont forget that it is also an exponential increase. So when he is at 300whp, you can expect the manifold to be good for another 30whp as long as the other components are out of there efficiency range.

He will be coming back for a Stealth Back exhaust install and a tune so we should be able to see how the manifold works with standard bolt ons and a tune.

agreed. but I was factoring the install as well. For the average person that could be one costly mod. I can see doing it when you would do say and inlet or TGV deletes

It'll be nice to see the differences with an exhaust and a tune keep us posted!

oh and take care of Nigel tomorrow :P

definitely interesting, i'm really not interested in taking my intake manifold off again any time soon though, haha. i'll be following to see where this goes though in case it is convincing enough to think about doing in the future.

I agree, if you have to factor in install prices and all, it will deffinatly inflate the price per hp. The owner of this car is about 55-60 years old and like to do all his own installs.

I agree that if you have to factor in install price, the price per hp goes up. The owner of this car is a 55-60 year old and still likes to do all his own installs. He wouldnt tell me what the mod was he made, I just figured it was a different restrictor for the boost lines for something small like that. When he told me what he did, it floored me.

Well.... since this thread is 8 months old and just now bumped.... don't suppose we could get an update on this older guy and his ported manifold? Did he ever comeback and have a turboback installed? Re-dyno? Bueller? Bueller?
