Mike Burns Photography - New Camera, New Pictures

A few days ago I picked up a Nikon D3100 and went out almost every day since to get some pictures. Here is some of what I took. I mostly do a lot of cars. Enjoy!

Im think I'm getting a little better at it.

#1 thing would be to watch your backgrounds, almost every pic has something "growing" out of the car, either a tree, a pole or a person (pic 8 ). so being that you "do a lot of cars" that would be something to keep in mind and work on.

otherwise i would say just continue to go out and shoot.

+1 on background.

when shooting pictures of any kind really, the less background the better.

It's a subject for a reason!!!

Other than that, looks great so far.

1. Watch your shutter speed and focus. Handholding 1/20th is a bitch.
2. A tree is growing out of the roof and is bigger than the car.
3. Why is a mustang fighting for attention from the subject which is the front of the car.
4. Another pole out of the roof... uninteresting background.
5. White balance. And why is the a cart corral in the background.
6. Looks like a snapshot. Why the school behind it?
7. JDM angles yo... your blowing out detail on the wall.
8. Better... but where is there a guy texting in the back.
9. More poles out of cars. Feels soft. Sharpen.
10. Watch your horizons, and get the other car out of the background.
11. Horizons. Another Pole.
12. The bike kills it for me. Another pole.
13. Better, but subject is underexposed. I would have waited longer and let the sun set more.
14. Okay, now we are getting somewhere despite some underexposure on the car. See how you are starting to let the light hit the body lines to show off the curves? Use the light.
15. Blowing out detail on the rear quarter, the tree in the reflection throws me off.
16. Looks like a snapshot, why is the window in there?
17. Why are you cutting off the bike?
18. Poles. And bikes. Again.

You said you wanted feedback... haha

Get a tripod, stop pulling cars in front of poles.

First off...I have to ask....what is the deal with the twisty tie in the exhaust? Oddly enough, I think the twisty tie picture was the best framed picture of all the ones you posted. Your subject is clearly defined and you still can get an idea of what's going in the background without really focusing on it. That's about where you want your subject in any given corner. Unless you're trying to put it smack in the middle...but unless you're doing a picture like #8 (RSX in wash bay) putting a subject in the middle is kind of iffy and only works in certain situations.

+1 getting a tripod will make a HUGE difference. Also, if your camera has AF point selection....make sure you're using it! It'll help keep your subject in focus while you frame the picture.

I'm going to have to disagree. As long as it's an interesting background that doesn't draw to much attention from your subject...size is kind of irrelevant.

OP, keep at it! Photography is awesome and it's something that completely rewards you the more time you invest into it. Also, don't get bummed if people give you harsh advice...it'll only help to make you a better photographer.

Thanks! I actually do....well did have a tripod. I found out it broke in my trunk but luckily my grandfather passed down to me a vintage 1960s tripod that I'm going to try to use lol. The zip tie in the exhaust...well that was my buddy tylers doing. We don't know why he does what he does and we don't ask questions lol.And as far as the AF point selection, I wasn't too sure what that even did

The AF point selecton allows you to move your AF point from the center of the screen anywhere you want.

This is important because something as simple as focusing on a subject then moving the camera to frame the picture can cause your subject to go out of focus.

Does that make sense? Kind of weird to explain.

I gotta reiterate on this point. AF selection has helped me SO MUCH after I learned how to use it on my camera. I have a nikon and using it is as easy as looking through the finder and just clicking left, right, up, down on the pad. Like the guys above stated, you're not making your cars the absolute focus in the pics. When you are zoomed out on a subject and there's other stuff forground or background, you're gonna use your AF selection to ensure you're focusing on the actualy subject of the picture.

_DSC0338 by Fabination, on Flickr

^^ this is what I mean, I used my AF selection to focus on the panda, but you can still see the steering wheel and dash and all that. It's a very useful tool dude. You just have to train yourself to remember all this stuff when you're shooting

also agree with this. If you're shooting cars, your best bet is to let the drivers sit in the car for some test shots till you get exactly what you want. If not, their just walking back and forth to the car to move it after every shot. You ALWAYS want to move the car around to adjust for lighting and stuff. Never overwork yourself, let the car work for you.

Ditto! I feel like a noob saying it but for the longest time I never even bothered to use it and half of my pics would come out unfocused while trying to shoot photos at lower F stops like f/1.8.

The other thing that I didn't use for the longest time which was a DUH moment once I realized I should be using it......was the light meter. Seems like common sense but if you're learning on your own and don't have someone explaining all of the features of the camera....it's very easy to overlook all of these useful tools.

Glad to hear it! Keep posting up pics every once and a while as you progress. It's always fun looking at other people's photos and asking yourself what you would have done different.
