Need some help with a Dodge Neon... Trans shifter solenoid, limp mode..

I just picked up a 2001 Neon as a project/investment. The PO told me it had a blown trans. Upon doing a bit of reading and researching, it seems more likely that the TSS is bad.

Symptoms include: wont rev past 4k in neutral, or 3k in gear (limp mode?). It wont shift into third gear. The revs rise slower than they should- it sounds like the motor is under heavy load when I rev it in neutral. Also (probably unrelated) but the battery goes dead after sitting for a day. BRAND new battery.

The thing thats stumping me is, theres no check engine light. I would assume if the car was in limp mode, itd have a CEL. I'd like to be able to confirm my suspicions before I go out and spend $155 on a TSS. It seems to have most of the symptoms of this problem, but id really be kicking myself if i replaced the part and it didnt solve the problem. Can anyone offer any advice on the matter?

yeah resetting the battery will clear the computer of all codes till the next fifty starts. and the speed sensor is a likely cause. when the neon gets locked in limp mode the car will not go out of second and will not rev past 4k which is what you have. if the trans was bad the neon would not engage and it would grind like hell when you try to put it into gear. how many miles does the car have on it. my speed sensor went when my r/t had 60k on it.

This has 130k.

By speed sensor, are you talking about the vehicle speed sensor? I was almost positive it would be the trans shifter solenoid (or solenoid pack).

it could be the trans shifter solenoid but if that were the case I would think it would lock you out and you would not even shift into gear. does the car struggle when you put it in reverse as well.

How far are you from a harrys u pull it yard in pa. Harry's in hazelton and pensburg have transmissions on sale this week for 50 and harys allentown has transmissions on sale the 25th-31st

If the shifter solenoid is bad, from what ive read it should put the motor in limp mode, but will still go into gear. Sometimes it limits you to 1st and 2nd gear, or just 2nd hear, or whatever the case may be. I havent driven the car aside from up and down the driveway. Reverse works, but it revs up slow just like drive does. Im 90% sure the transmission is ok, that its just some sort of sensor problem, but being that the TSS is $155, id like to confirm it somehow. I really expected it to throw a code for the TSS, but maybe I cleared it when i replaced the battery. Ive had the car sitting at idle for more than 10 minutes though, how long would it take for a code to reappear? And would the code reappear if i dont drive it, just let it idle?

Hit the junk yard and get a few sensors... there is bound to be atleast 1 good one. If you swap them all and don't get different results, its safe to say your sensor is fine and its something else.

code won't show in idle. you have drive the car or you start the car 50 times before the code will be noticed again. because when you pull the negative terminal off it rests the car computer and wipe out all the codes the car has saved on it.

as far as tss I'm not to sure for that to be the cause. you can try posting on 2gn.org in the drivetrain section. it a neon forum so I'm sure someone there might have had the same problem and solved it.

Unfortunately I cant get on 2gn.org because its blocked at work, and i dont have internet at home at the moment. Yeah, kinda pathetic. But Ive done several hours of googling, and despite the mixed information im getting, it seems the most likely cause of my problems is the shifter solenoid pack. Apparently its very common for these transmissions. Since the car is just getting fixed to be sold and not kept, I picked up a used (with 45 day warranty) solenoid pack on ebay for $50. After I swap it in, I assume I should reset the ECU? That would cause it to come out of limp mode, or will i have to drive it to get it back to normal?

Well this is awesome. I bought a shifter solenoid for the car. Youd think that after all the googling I did, itd be a bit more prominent that these cars came with 3 AND 4 speed automatics. But noooo, I had to find out by trying to put a part on a car that it doesnt even use.

So Im back to square 1. No CEL's, runs like crap, revs up slow, doesnt shift properly, and its a THREE SPEED. Any suggestions? Looks like Im gonna have to drop the pan and change the filter and fluid.

Well I had planned on doing that anyway, but I was pretty dern sure that the symptoms i was experiencing was due to the shifter solenoid. So I wanted to replace that first, then do the filter and fluid. But upon further digging, i found that a clogged filter is fairly common for these transmissions, and that new fluid and filter could also fix my issues. So I'll do that today, and pray that fixes it. I really wish itd just throw a frigging CEL though.

had the same problem with 05 neon... what you need to do is change the cat... thats all. Just take to to a muffler shop and have them cut that crap out and weld a new one on.

I changed the serpentine belt and the spark plugs. Wanted to change the transmission fluid, but cant get the oil pan off. Any tips on that? I removed all the bolts, but it was assembled with a gasket and then RTV, so its like glued to the bottom of the trans. So much so, that I cant even get it to budge. I cant get a knife in there, nor a putty knife, or even a flathead. I cant get the pan to budge at all.

And while taking a wheel off to do the belt, two of the lug studs snapped off. And I got $180 inspection ticket yesterday. F*** me!
