D40 won't turn on

Just thought I'd see if any of you camera gurus had any advice for me. I gave my D40 to my little brother in May, and then in August he lent it to one of my friends to take on a trip to California. When I got it back the camera wouldn't turn on. I thought the battery was dead, but after I charged it fully it still did not turn on. My two immediate thoughts are either the battery is bad, or the switch went, but I'm not really savvy with camera tech. Also read something about a PCB unit that sometiems goes bad?

It's just over 2 years old, so I don't know if the factory warranty would still apply.

Any thoughts on what it could be, if it's not a bad battery?

That sucks Andrew. Unfortunately, Nikon bodies only have a 1 year warranty. I'd post this question over on the Cafe too. Maybe someone has had the same issue.

Good idea.. I need to do some more digging to see if anyone else has had this problem. I know there are a handful of D40 owners/people who started with the D40 on TST, but it was a longshot lol.

When you pop the battery in, is there an activity light that goes on in the back of the camera? when you do this, do you have a memory card in too?

couple ideas could be to hold down the 2 green buttons, i think ones on the top of the camera and the other on the back. That will "reset" the camera. Other idea would be to connect the camera to the computer, see if it recognizes it, and try and do a firmware update.

No activity light whatsoever, also tried the reset thing and it didn't work. Not sure if there is a mc in it or not but I don't think there is.

I'll try the firmware thing, tomorrow and let you know how it goes. Thanks Jim!

The firmware thing is not going to help you. The camera has to actually turn on to load new firmware. Since it doesn't turn on, I would just box it up and send it to Nikon to get an estimate.
