Ford once owned the controlling stake in Mazda, About 30%. In 2008, Ford sold the stake back to Mazda. Now Ford owns 3% of Mazda, and Mazda is once again in control of itself.

If you noticed in 2008, Ford went their separate ways by quickly redesigning the Fusion and Focus where they no longer used parts from 03+ Mazda 6 and 04+ Mazda 3. Instead, they started using the parts from their European Ford's. The new Mazda 6 and CX-5 are built and designed in Japan now by Mazda itself. In the past, the Mazda 6 was built in the U.S., and the Tribute/B series was a rebadged Ford made in the U.S.

However, Ford and Mazda are still both open to partnerships in the future for certain cars.

Even in the 90's, Mazda's were made in Japan except the B series, MX-6, and 626. In America, Mazda shared suppliers of suspension components and engine accesories like a water pump or alternator with Ford. For example, the Escort and early Focus had a few parts pulled from the Mazda 323/Protege parts bin. I did read that Mazda shared the Protege manual transmission with the Kia Sephia and Ford Focus at some point in the 90's.

Iv'e been following the organization and relationship of most automakers, namely the big three. (I read lots of car magazines and I am subscribed to a few)
