The Galant Returns

Most of you folks might not remember me. I posted once a while back when I joined and introduced you guys to my '91 Galant VR-4, and then promptly fell off the face of the planet (my bad).

Well, now I'm back, and I've got lots of pics for you guys. And so goes the story of 931.

When it rolled off of the flatbed and into my driveway late last winter, it was nothing more than a shell. It had no engine or transmission, and the interior was badly deteriorated from sitting in the sun for 3 years. But it was rust free, no major damage, and it was a beautiful blank canvas.

My plans for this car were modest at best. Find an engine, find a transmission, dump in a Evo3 16G, paint it up, and have a nice clean 'old school' car that I can show off. But then I started finding deals all over the place.

So much for those plans. It didn't take long for me to revise the situation and change direction. Instead of a nice looking car to putter about, I decided to build up a nice looking car that would leave their jaws hanging when I blow by them. And it would remain stock looking, right down to the 15" factory wheels.

On the interior, I pulled out the worn seats, ugly whiteface gauge cluster and a-pillar gauge pod. In went a stock cluster, some reconditioned leather seats, and a set of gauges that I call 'factory aftermarket'. Note the period correct audio system.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...4/DSCF0291.jpg

Underneath the hood, the sleeper theme continues. The intercooler and piping was painted to stay hidden behind the bumper. The Precision Turbo was internally gated so no huge wastegate gives away it's potential, and the stock blow-off valve remains recirculated to avoid the familiar "chirp" of a turbocharged engine.

On the outside, other than a new grille, the car keeps its stock appearance.

So there you have it. I'm still doing the shakedown on the car and working out the bugs so no times at the track yet. The boost has been kept at it's 15 psi minimum, but even at that low setting it's been running as fast as my old Talon that had pushed 21 psi out of a 16G, so I figure I'm on the right track. I don't plan on taking it down the quarter mile too many times as I'm focused more on road courses, so once I have the engine sorted, my focus will be on suspension and maybe I'll get around to painting it too.

Definately a 6-bolt with the CAS and all that room. So that slims it down to between 90-93.

No way!!! I thought that would be the last thing to go on that ride.

I was hoping to take it down the track at the east coast shootout, but the turbo (Precision Turbo GT3251) blew two days before the runs so now I'm waiting on a replacement CHRA.

The shelll was just $1500, but since I was starting from scratch and had no spare parts to work with, it was a lot of nickel and diming. I've kept tabs on how much it cost me just to get it rolling under its own power and it came out to nearly $6500 (car included), but that's mainly because I was building the car up at the same time. I'm sure it would've been only 1/3 the cost if I just found a six-bolt, dropped in a 14B and slapped in a stock exhaust and called it a day.

I picked it up from a guy down in DC. The engine was pulled from another GVR-4 that a friend of mine had sold.

Nice. I like the older cars that absolutely murder some new stuff. Stealth is the way to go.
