Cop ignored street racing

So tonight I was on my way home from my boyfriend's at 11 and I got stuck at the light on the Boulevard to make my left onto Rhawn. I noticed a cop sitting, first car, at the light on Rhawn crossing the Boulevard when two Civics flew by, practically at red-line, racing up the Boulevard. The cop just sat there, didn't even flinch, and just continued on his way when his light changed.

Now, if I could have been more prepared and able to get his car number or other identifying information would there have been anything I could do as far as reporting the fact that he blatantly ignored an illegal act of street racing? I mean, they could have killed someone and he did nothing. I know he saw it. I was looking in the opposite direction before I [h]heard[/i] them over my radio.

A cop friend of mine was able to answer my question staring police aren't allowed to chase after them because if anything were to happen to the driver, the family can sue the City and all that nonscense. What I don't understand is why it's okay to "chase" someone in a stolen car or someone eluding police but not okay to chase someone who was already endangering others?

What you have to remember is that even though a Police Officer may not have his or her lights and sirens activated, they might be on their way to an in-progress complaint. There are only specific complaints that allow us to go "code." If that were me, I would have notified my dispatch center of the Civic's and maybe they can notify an Officer who is in the area and available to try and catch them racing.

Don't just assume the Officer totally ignored the vehicles, chances are he or she was already busy with something.
