help buying a laptop

alright soo i plan on buying a laptop this week and im stuck right now. it seemed easy but now i cant decide AMD w/ Power now or Intel Core Duo w/ centrino.
I'm pretty set that i want vista even though people tell me its not to stable yet, but its the new thing so i want it.
I'm also pretty well set with getting an HP well that is before i saw the amazing deals on Gateway and Acer? soo heres a few that im thinking about.. let me know if you have an feedback or comments on any of them or any thing...
I'm trying to keep it around $999 max because i'm thinking about buying that $300 warranty that covers if you drop it and what not...

1.) This one is nice because of the whole lightscribe and just the looks of the HP, the gloss black makes the colors on the screen look better.. im just thinking AMD??
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1166236071888

2.) This one seems like a really really good deal, but i havent heard much of ACER..
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1167445162771

3.) I like this one because of the specs..
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....prd67400050002

and last but not least
4.) This one is actually my favorite i think, i just like the 14" screen like the 1st one i showed...
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-Pa...oductDetail.do

so basically im stuck between those.. but i am interested in any others you might know of (700-1000ish)... let me know if you know anything about any of those.

I prefer AMD processors in my Desktops, but when it comes to laptops and battery life I would stick with Intel. My Compaq V2000 with a Turion 64 performs well, but 99% of the time I have it locked at 800Mhz. Even then the battery craps out well before my friends laptop, which is basically the same thing only with a Pentium M.

I don't know why everyone dogs dell. I got a screaming dell laptop and I haven't had a single problem with it at all, granted thats after I re-formatted it to get rid of all the crap that they put on it. Mine was also more then double what you want to spend.

The lite scribe thing is cool, but it takes a while, like 20 mins or more.

I personally would get an HP over gateway or acer. But thats me. I would get a dell over all of them. No ones customer support is all that great but dell's is better then the rest.

the 14" screen is borderline too small IMHO. I'm very happy with my 15.4"

yeahh thanks man... im gonna check out the 15 and 14 next to each other.. im just thinking once i get a DSMLINK the 14 will fit in the car alot better and easier.. but we'll see... about the whole AMD and Intel. i've heard from alot of sources that AMD is a much better processor but battery life is not as good soo if i end up getting the 14" amd thats $100 less, im going to put that towards a 12cell battery..

IBMs are business computers - no point in getting one (IMO) for everyday use.

And the AMD processor eats a bit more power but not to the degree where it can stand alone for under half the time or something rediculous like that. The AMD laptop might need to be recharged 20-30 minutes sooner or something like that.

I'd suggest 2 things to overcome your battery concerns.
1) get a spare battery
2) get the in car charging kit for the laptop. Especially if you plan on using it in the car.

alright well thanks for all the help everyone. i ended up getting an HP..
the specs are...
intel core 2 duo 1.6ghz
1024mb ram
120gig HD
intel graphics media acc. 950 upto 256mb.

i chose this one mainly because HP seemed the nicest, i like the lightscribe even though i didnt try it yet, and the built in webcam was nice...
