You pretty much have to have everything hooked up if you want to get it started.

just cranking the motor wont tell you if its working properly. all that will tell you is that its not seized and maybe that the internals can move lol. id assume you still want to know if theres compression? if the bearings are ok, etc etc.

although you don't necessarily need to have everything hooked up to know if it's good or not. JDM Engine Depot brought my RB25 over with a forklift and started it on the ground for me before i even got my money from the truck. plug the harness into the ECU, give it power, ground, fuel, etc at all the right spots and you'll be able to hear it fire for sure. mine shut off right away because there was no charge piping hooked up, but it fired and ran for a few seconds... enough to make me comfortable buying it. just bolt the damn thing in and zap the starter with some volage. if she cranks w/o funky noise then ur not seized. then do a comp test. all u need is power going to the starter and your gravy. you dont need to hookup anything at all (just make sure its not in gear and its bolted in properly)
